Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Water and Energy Connections in Rural Areas: Discussion (6 Dec 2023)

Denis Naughten: I thank all of the witnesses for their evidence and time this morning. I have a few questions; I might start with Mr. O'Reilly. I will talk about something parochial, but it applies across the country, which is wastewater treatment facilities in many smaller towns and villages. In east Galway, for example, in villages like Castleblakeney, Creggs, Kilconnell and Caltra, wastewater treatment...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Water and Energy Connections in Rural Areas: Discussion (6 Dec 2023)

Denis Naughten: I will not dwell on it but whether it is cost base, auction or bid, it is all the same in the impact it has on island communities. The island co-operatives are prepared to play under the current rules; the difficulty is getting the grid connection. It will be more expensive to do that from the offshore islands. Their ability to generate electricity and additional income is curtailed by...

Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: Educational Disadvantage (5 Dec 2023)

Denis Naughten: 241. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills if she will review the current policy of withdrawing DEIS status to amalgamated schools where all schools do not have DEIS status prior to amalgamation; if she is aware of the fact that this policy is a barrier to amalgamations; if she can explain the justification where two single sex schools in the same town amalgamate into the only school...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (30 Nov 2023)

Denis Naughten: Three years ago, the long-awaited final report of the expert group on the review of the law of torts and the management of clinical negligence claims was published but we are still waiting for action. This includes the provision of the long-awaited vaccine damage compensation scheme, which the Tánaiste committed to progressing both as Minister for health and as Taoiseach. It is in the...

Denis Naughten: I was never shy of that, Tánaiste.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí (Atógáil) - Leaders' Questions (Resumed) (30 Nov 2023)

Denis Naughten: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, COPD, is a major health issue in Ireland claiming the lives of four people daily. It is a lung condition affecting one in 13 adults which hinders the movement of air in and out of their lungs and makes breathing difficult. Despite its manageability, only 20% of those with COPD are diagnosed. Often, this is too late, as diagnoses frequently occur...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí (Atógáil) - Leaders' Questions (Resumed) (30 Nov 2023)

Denis Naughten: I want to focus on one contributory factor for COPD which is poor housing. Research commissioned by the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications and produced by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine has shown that retrofitting of homes of those with COPD or asthma reduces their use of GP, emergency department and hospital services. This is a win for our climate...

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh (Atógáil) - Priority Questions (Resumed): Road Safety (30 Nov 2023)

Denis Naughten: In that presentation, the results given to us, based on UK research and data, show that these technologies could reduce the overall number of accidents by close to one quarter and that pedestrian accidents could be reduced by 28%. If that was applied across all vehicles in Ireland today, the 42 pedestrians who sadly lost their lives on Irish roads last year, the highest figure in the last 15...

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh (Atógáil) - Priority Questions (Resumed): Road Safety (30 Nov 2023)

Denis Naughten: It would save emissions as well, which the Minister, Deputy Ryan, would be happy with.

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh (Atógáil) - Priority Questions (Resumed): Road Safety (30 Nov 2023)

Denis Naughten: 4. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he will seek the consent of the EU Commission to restrict the sale of all new cars on Irish roads without advanced driver assistance systems technologies that assist drivers in driving and parking functions and, as a result, dramatically reduce road traffic accidents; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [51465/23]

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh (Atógáil) - Priority Questions (Resumed): Road Safety (30 Nov 2023)

Denis Naughten: Last year we had the highest number of road deaths in six years and, tragically, it looks like 2023 will surpass this figure. While we need increased enforcement, we also need to recognise that driver error is one of the biggest causes of deaths on Irish roads. We need to address this by using in-car technology that can significantly reduce road accidents and deaths.

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh (Atógáil) - Priority Questions (Resumed): Road Safety (30 Nov 2023)

Denis Naughten: I thank the Minister of State for his response and the progress being made on this. It is in the context of the Science Week Ireland presentation that Members of the Oireachtas received from Professor Martin Mullins from the University of Limerick and Professor Martin Glavin from the University of Galway, who articulated to us how this technology, using artificial intelligence, can...
