Seanad: Order of Business. (29 Sep 2010)

Nicky McFadden: I support Senator O'Reilly on the issue of energy costs. It is appalling that in the case of electricity there is a disconnection fee of €97.61 and a reconnection fee of €99.98. It is appalling that those who cannot afford to pay electricity bills running into hundreds of euro must pay a fee when their supply is cut off and a further outrageous sum to have it reconnected. It was...

Seanad: Drug Treatment Programme (29 Sep 2010)

Nicky McFadden: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. I raise this important issue because I understand that only an ad hoc service is provided for methadone users and those suffering from addiction in the midlands. One doctor must be assigned for the exclusive care of the increasing number of drug addicts in the midlands. I understand we live in challenging times, with serious rises in...

I understand we are in financially...

Seanad: Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2010: Committee and Remaining Stages (13 Jul 2010)

Nicky McFadden: The kernel of the issue is that all these appeals are being made because people are desperate and they need the money to survive. They need to put bread on the table and to pay the ESB bill. We should not lose track of the fact this is the reason for the significant increase in appeals. The bottom line is people really need the money.

Seanad: Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2010: Committee and Remaining Stages (13 Jul 2010)

Nicky McFadden: I move amendment No. 13: In page 6, before section 3, but in Part 2, to insert the following new section: 3.—The Minister shall, within 2 months of the enactment of this Act, report to the Houses of the Oireachtas, on the progress made in reducing the processing time for social welfare payments.". This amendment is about waiting lists in terms of processing claims. In my own area of...
