- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Workforce Planning in Acute and Community Care Settings: Discussion (21 Oct 2020)
Colm Burke: I will be very brief. What changes do the witnesses want to see with regard to specialist registrars and their training, as well as junior doctors? I would appreciate a written reply on the changes they would make in order to assist people who are in that category. There also seems to be a lack of understanding around consultant contracts. A lot of people do not understand that a lot of...

- Financial Resolutions 2020 - Financial Resolution No. 7: General (Resumed) (14 Oct 2020)
Colm Burke: I welcome the budget and the additional €4 billion in funding for health services. We are talking about an additional 1,146 acute beds. The number of critical care beds is to increase from 255 to 321. However, this is not just about beds. It is also about ensuring access to theatre space and facilities like X-ray and MRI. It is important that there is a co-ordinated approach to...
- Public Accounts Committee: Business of the Committee (14 Oct 2020)
Colm Burke: The OPW acquires property for Departments. If its representatives come before the committee and we then have, for argument's sake, the Department of Justice and Equality in two weeks later, how then are we to deal with issues relating to buildings acquired by the Department through the OPW? While the Department gets the benefit of the building, the OPW manages the purchase.
- Public Accounts Committee: Business of the Committee (14 Oct 2020)
Colm Burke: Okay. I just wanted to clarify with regard to the issue I raised earlier. I believe that it will come under the OPW's remit rather than that of the Department of Justice and Equality.

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Sláintecare (14 Oct 2020)
Colm Burke: I wish to return to the issue of elective hospitals. While Ms Magahy has answered some questions on this issue already, I am a little confused because the committee got the same answers to questions on this issue 12 months ago. If one takes Cork as an example, a number of sites are clearly suitable for the development of a new elective hospital, one being in Sarsfield Court, which has more...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Sláintecare (14 Oct 2020)

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Sláintecare (14 Oct 2020)
Colm Burke: Could I have the figures?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Sláintecare (14 Oct 2020)
Colm Burke: The figure I have is from the middle of 2019. Between December 2014 and the middle of 2019 there was an additional 60 nurses, which is an increase of approximately 3.5%, whereas in the hospital service there was an increase of 17% between nurse managers and nurses working on the front line. That is 17% compared with 3.5%. That does not fit when we are talking about community care.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Sláintecare (14 Oct 2020)
Colm Burke: I am talking about public health nurses, because the issue now is that we want more people to stay at home and not to be in nursing homes. We need to make sure that we have a sufficient number of professionals to be able to deal with the new challenges posed by the number of people requiring care in the home. I have been involved in a case already that was covered by one of the national...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Update on Sláintecare (14 Oct 2020)
Colm Burke: I am not blaming the public health nurse. It is about not having sufficient numbers.
