- Joint Standing Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands: Ionaid Cúraim Leanaí Lán-Ghaeilge i gCeantair Gaeltachta: Díospóireacht (Atógáil) (4 Jul 2018)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Tá sin ann maidir le Gaeilge agus Béarla.
- Joint Standing Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands: Ionaid Cúraim Leanaí Lán-Ghaeilge i gCeantair Gaeltachta: Díospóireacht (Atógáil) (4 Jul 2018)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Bheadh sé an-úsáideach - níl a fhios agam faoin cuid eile den choiste - ag éirí as sin más rud é go raibh na finnéithe in ann a rá go bhfuil na héilimh comhaontaithe trasna an bhord leis an gcomhcoiste luathoideachas agus go bhfuil sé aontaithe le na heagraíochtaí atá ag plé le na naíonraí Gaeilge ar fud...

Éamon Ó Cuív: Níl sé ráite anseo.
- Joint Standing Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands: Ionaid Cúraim Leanaí Lán-Ghaeilge i gCeantair Gaeltachta: Díospóireacht (Atógáil) (4 Jul 2018)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Gabhaim buíochas leis na finnéithe. Tá an méid atá le rá acu thar a bheith spéisiúil. Bhreathnaigh mé ar an éileamh atá acu. Brisim i ndá chuid é - an t-éileamh náisiúnta atá ar an earnáil luathoideachais a bhaineann le Gaeilge sa nGaeltacht agus sa nGalltacht, agus an t-éileamh ar an...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Supporting and Facilitating the Arts: Discussion (4 Jul 2018)
Éamon Ó Cuív: The Deputy is welcome up to Galway for the festival.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Supporting and Facilitating the Arts: Discussion (4 Jul 2018)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I, too, must apologise that I was not here but this place has a lot of things going on at the one time at the moment. It is the last two weeks of the term. One of the challenges of the arts in the modern world is that they are seen in a compartment. We live in a very compartmentalised world and the arts are seen as being there for certain people. One thing that we have to recognise is...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Supporting and Facilitating the Arts: Discussion (4 Jul 2018)
Éamon Ó Cuív: The reason is that the arts festival is based in the city. The city council only has responsibility for the city and Galway city is small. It stretches from Knocknacarra, from the wood in Barna over to Doughiska, whereas Galway County Council has to stretch from Ballinasloe to Bofin and Dunmore to Gort. The city is now part of its functional area, whether that is good, bad or indifferent....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Supporting and Facilitating the Arts: Discussion (4 Jul 2018)
Éamon Ó Cuív: It is fantastic. I say on the record of the Dáil that time will vindicate the investment but we need more venues. It is great at the moment that, although one might not be able to sell tickets, one can at least have outdoor events if there is weather like this. It can be very successful. We live in a wet climate, however, and we need indoor venues. There will never be enough venues...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Supporting and Facilitating the Arts: Discussion (4 Jul 2018)
Éamon Ó Cuív: When I was in the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, customer service, forms and so on were a big issue. I came to the conclusion that many people who were making the forms would not know how to fill them if they were not in that section in the Department. A challenge I put was that if one was drawing up a form, one should give it to somebody in the Department who was a...
- Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: Schools Building Projects Status (4 Jul 2018)
Éamon Ó Cuív: 119. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills further to Parliamentary Question No. 96 of 31 May 2018, the number of times contact has been made with a school (details supplied) to date in 2018; the details of the correspondence or discussions with the school to resolve the outstanding issues relating to the provision of a new building for the school; and if he will make a statement on...
- Heritage Bill 2016: Report Stage (Resumed) (3 Jul 2018)
Éamon Ó Cuív: In general, in many parts of the country the hedges are much higher and bigger than they were 40 or 50 years ago, or more especially 100 years ago, where every winter they were cut back low. The available testimony tells us that was the way it was because land was scarce and precious. The people then had a way of folding the hedges in. If one looks out across the countryside from my house,...
- Heritage Bill 2016: Report Stage (Resumed) (3 Jul 2018)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Well, whatever.
- Heritage Bill 2016: Report Stage (3 Jul 2018)
Éamon Ó Cuív: There are two key issues in section 7. The first is to allow burning in March. I live in one of the wettest places in Ireland and the idea of burning anything in February is ludicrous. The reality is that the burning of open hill has been going on for a long time. As I said in the committee, there is a reference in the poem, "Anach Cuan" to "Loscadh sléibhte agus scalladh...
- Heritage Bill 2016: Report Stage (3 Jul 2018)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I have to say the elegance of the new wording is beyond reproach and replaces a more clumsy wording. I am pleased that the Minister accepted the spirit in which the amendment was put forward and that there was a change needed. Obviously, I would never argue with the Office of Parliamentary Counsel when it comes to good wording. I agree with this amendment.
- Heritage Bill 2016: Report Stage (3 Jul 2018)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I move amendment No. 6:In page 5, line 40, to delete "and" and substitute the following:"(ii) develop a system whereby interested parties can register electronically with Waterways Ireland and be notified automatically of all bye-laws proposed to be made, and". I put this amendment forward here so that we can have a brief debate. Good reasons were put in our discussions as to why this should...
- Heritage Bill 2016: Report Stage (3 Jul 2018)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I move amendment No. 8:In page 6, line 32, to delete "website." and substitute the following:"website, and(iii) ensure that Authorised Officers have access to a copy of the bye-laws (electronic or printed version) for presentation on request by a canal user.". The amendment would ensure that the authorised officers would have access to the by-laws. I would like to hear the Minister's...
- Heritage Bill 2016: Report Stage (3 Jul 2018)
Éamon Ó Cuív: On the basis that it is accepted that the officers in other positions whom the Minister mentioned do not have to carry the laws or by-laws that they are applying, I withdraw the amendment.
- Heritage Bill 2016: Report Stage (3 Jul 2018)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I move amendment No. 12:In page 9, between lines 12 and 13, to insert the following:(iii) if the evidence requested under subparagraph (ii) is not available then an individual should be able to produce said evidence within a reasonable period of time and at a place as specified by bye-laws;". This seeks to ensure that somebody would have an opportunity, if he or she did not have the required...
- Heritage Bill 2016: Report Stage (3 Jul 2018)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I accept that there was a duplication here. A more careful reading shows what the Minister states is a fact, that the persons who are not boat owners are catered for but one might want to contact a boat owner when he or she is not on the canal. In other words, a boat owner might leave a boat on the canal. Therefore, the two subsections are slightly different. One is giving an order to...
- Heritage Bill 2016: Report Stage (3 Jul 2018)
Éamon Ó Cuív: We accept that Waterways Ireland is a North-South body with two Ministers in charge. The concern was that someone would make orders impeding navigation. I have been assured that will not happen and that under the current legislation, one cannot close a waterway on a permanent basis without the agreement of both Ministers. On that basis, we will certainly not oppose the amendment. I thank...
