Seanad: Order of Business. (20 Apr 2010)

Mark Daly: Senator Buttimer was waiting to stand up all over Easter.

Seanad: Order of Business. (25 Mar 2010)

Mark Daly: Come off it. What about the 30,000 jobs it created?

Seanad: Order of Business. (9 Mar 2010)

Mark Daly: I ask the Leader to organise a debate on the rush to secularism, to which Senator Harris referred. We had a curious case in County Kerry over the weekend in which a statue was moved. It was put up on the day the Second World War broke out, 3 September 1939, yet it cannot survive the machinations of the Health and Safety Authority which indicated that it was a threat to health and safety.

Seanad: Order of Business. (9 Mar 2010)

Mark Daly: I was given many reasons as to why the statue had been removed, of which health and safety was one. Another was that it might give offence. We are now rushing to remove all religious symbols from hospitals, Garda stations, Leinster House and other places without any policy being formulated. Are we removing everything? Are we going to use health and safety as an excuse to remove religious...

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Feb 2010)

Mark Daly: I welcome Senator Mark Deary to the House. This is a proud day for his family, friends and supporters and a triumph of their combined efforts over many years. Protocol precludes me from singing "Happy Birthday to You" to Senator Deary's daughter, Stella, but I wish her a happy birthday.

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Feb 2010)

Mark Daly: I ask the Leader to bring the Minister for Foreign Affairs to the House to speak about the ongoing saga of the use of Irish passports by Mossad, or by those who perpetrated the murder in Dubai. Today, we learned that the address given on the hotel bill was that of a former Taoiseach's brother. Of course, that information was released with a purpose. They want us to know how good they are....

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Feb 2010)

Mark Daly: The Senator's time is up.

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Feb 2010)

Mark Daly: I call on the Leader to organise a debate on the initiative launched yesterday by the President, Mary McAleese, entitled Your Country, Your Call that, to quote her, seeks game changing ideas. The concept was put together by her husband, Martin McAleese. He spoke of how if this country continues to believe it can solve its problems using the solutions of before, then we will never get out of...

Seanad: Haiti Disaster: Motion (Resumed) (27 Jan 2010)

Mark Daly: As Senator Ó Murchú pointed out, this country is well aware of the consequences of disaster. Having gone through the Famine, this has inspired us as a nation to help others in the sort of situation in which Haiti now finds itself. One of the most telling remarks in the entire history of the Irish Famine was uttered by that famous Englishman, Lord Trevelyan, when he decided to cut all aid...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Jan 2010)

Mark Daly: I welcome Senator Paschal Mooney to the House. His contribution to Irish life is well known throughout the country. Like Senator Hanafin, I commend the United States on its efforts in Haiti. Too often people in this country criticise the United States at every opportunity but when given a chance to praise the US for its great efforts, they remain silent. Will the Leader invite the Minister...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Dec 2009)

Mark Daly: I ask the Leader to arrange a debate on the situation in Gaza. As the first anniversary of the Israeli invasion of Gaza approaches, I commend the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Deputy Micheál Martin, on his strong stance on the issue. His request to visit Gaza was refused by the Israeli authorities, as was a similar request by the French Foreign Minister. Despite this refusal, the Minister...

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Dec 2009)

Mark Daly: I welcome Senator Ó Brolcháin to the House. I well remember calling to his front door and getting a grilling. It was more an interview for a job than anything else. I look forward to working with him in the Seanad on the issues we discussed on that day, including mobile phone masts, active citizenship and alternative energy. I congratulate not only Senator Ó Brolcháin and the Green...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Dec 2009)

Mark Daly: I welcome the Taoiseach's announcement of a hospital for Kenmare. It is unfortunate that my Seanad colleagues on the Opposition complained about the new hospital being anywhere in the country at this time. The fact of the matter is that the hospital in Kenmare is not meeting current HIQA standards and has to be replaced.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Dec 2009)

Mark Daly: Local public representatives such as Mr. Patrick Scarteen, and Mr. Mike Scarteen before him, Ms Breda Moynihan-Cronin and Deputies Sheahan, O'Donoghue and Healy-Rae worked hard.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Dec 2009)

Mark Daly: I ask the Leader to bring the Minister into the House. We have been working on this issue in Kenmare since 1976, when the extra 12 beds were first announced and announcements were made in 1997, 2002, 2007 and 2008. The importance of this hospital cannot be overstated in an ageing community where many people need long-term assistance and care to recover from illnesses. I ask the Leader to...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Dec 2009)

Mark Daly: And his father before him.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Dec 2009)

Mark Daly: With regard to the Minister for Foreign Affairs being denied access to Gaza, will the leader invite him to the House to discuss the issue of Gaza? Irish taxpayers' money is being given to the Palestinian authorities in overseas development aid to rebuild Gaza's infrastructure, water and sewerage system, which are in dire condition. Many people are suffering there at present. For the...

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Dec 2009)

Mark Daly: They are trying to extrapolate from the 10% or 15% who are fraudulent in high risk categories, such as child allowance to non-nationals. We have all encountered such cases. However, one cannot say there is a fraud rate of between 10% and 15% among pensioners. That is not the case.

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Dec 2009)

Mark Daly: The Minister, Deputy Mary Hanafin, was quite clear this morning on "Morning Ireland" that the Department is looking at a 10% to 15% fraud rate in some high risk categories of social welfare. In other categories, such as pensions and fuel allowance to pensioners, there is not that level of fraud. The "Prime Time Investigates" programme was excellent and we applaud it, but there is already...

Seanad: Interim Report on Flooding on River Shannon, November 2000: Statements (4 Dec 2009)

Mark Daly: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Mansergh. I will be parochial at the outset and thank him for allocating funding towards the study on the flooding that took place in Kenmare last year. We got ahead of the posse and had our flooding early. On a more serious note, we must praise all the emergency services who ensured there was no loss of life. While there was horrendous damage to...
