Seanad: Work Life Balance and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2022: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (1 Mar 2023)

Paul Gavan: We support this amendment but we are a little disappointed with the period of eight years. We believe it should be reduced. I cannot quite see the logic of eight years; three or four would be a much more appropriate figure. It is a reduction so we will support it, but we are a little disappointed.

Seanad: Work Life Balance and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2022: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (1 Mar 2023)

Paul Gavan: I want to welcome Sarah Benson from Women's Aid, who is in the Gallery to witness this debate first hand. The Minister said he has listened to concerned voices. I do not understand how he can say that when he knows the reduced pay provisions remain in the Bill. What the Minister has not done in his response is in any way address the Sinn Féin amendment. The key part of the amendment...

Seanad: Work Life Balance and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2022: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (1 Mar 2023)

Paul Gavan: Of course we welcome these amendments, but they do not address the reduced pay provisions that remain in the Bill. While we will support the amendments, I put it to the Minister that they still do not address the issue of reduced pay. I note the Minister's comments when he introduced the amendments. It is important that he puts on the record here this evening that he will ensure that...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Industrial Relations (28 Feb 2023)

Paul Gavan: It is good to see the Minister.I do not know how much contact he has had with these workers but when you speak to them and hear about the constraints on their lives because of the lack of a decent public service contract, you discover they have to sign on every summer and have to take out credit union loans to get through that summer because they only get the money for the dole by the time...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Industrial Relations (28 Feb 2023)

Paul Gavan: Not at all. I again thank the Minister. I hear his engagement and I absolutely accept it. The blockage in the Department of Public Expenditure, National Development Plan Delivery and Reform is entirely unacceptable. Of course, there is also collective Cabinet responsibility. It is up to the Cabinet to resolve this matter without further delay. The Minister acknowledged how important...

Seanad: Remuneration Information and Pay Transparency Bill 2023: Second Stage (Resumed) (28 Feb 2023)

Paul Gavan: I welcome the Minister. On behalf of Sinn Féin I want to say that in the round we welcome this Bill. The process of applying for jobs can be a gruelling and protracted one. At the very least, those setting out on this journey deserve to be able to see in advance what pay is being offered. Equally, existing workers deserve to see the pay being offered to new recruits within the...
