- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Climate Change Issues: Discussion (14 Nov 2017)
Michelle Mulherin: It is a very interesting debate, but my observation of land down my way is that farmers farm the land and then might have fields that they might not think as being as good as the other land. This does not mean the farmer has stopped farming. Is this a phenomenon that is happening in Leitrim and not in Mayo? To what extent are people completely getting out of any other type of farming and...

- Seanad: Public Health (Alcohol) Bill 2015: Committee Stage (Resumed) (8 Nov 2017)
Michelle Mulherin: I fully support the introduction of the Bill as a reflection of one of our public health policy objectives. As a Government, we need to move forward as unanimously as we can to address issues like binge drinking and alcohol addiction in this country. We have to be courageous as we try to change the way things operate at the moment. When we attempt to change the status quo, there is...
- Seanad: Public Health (Alcohol) Bill 2015: Committee Stage (Resumed) (8 Nov 2017)
Michelle Mulherin: Section 20 has been a particular sticking point in the Bill. As legislators, we must always consider whether a proposed measure is proportionate and reasonable. The answer quite a number of us on all sides of the House came up with in this case was that this provision would probably constitute too great a burden, if implemented, on small shops as compared to multiple retailers. When it was...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Upcoming CAP Negotiations: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (7 Nov 2017)
Michelle Mulherin: I welcome this discussion. These meetings give us an opportunity to think about CAP and the position in which it has put Europe and its member states. We are the largest agrifood exporter in the world. Many of the concerns which our farmers have are about South American countries having access to the market, but we are the biggest agrifood exporter. Why are we the biggest agrifood...
- Seanad: Order of Business (26 Oct 2017)
Michelle Mulherin: On a lighter note I congratulate Brian Dobson and Sharon Ní Bheoláin and wish them well in their new positions. I am delighted to see that they are being replaced by an all-female line up. The two women, Keelin Shanley and Caitriona Perry, have an excellent track record as broadcasters and journalists.
- Seanad: Order of Business (26 Oct 2017)
Michelle Mulherin: Ordinarily it seems as though boards, committees and line ups are dominated by men and they have to have a woman for balance. I am pleased that these great women will anchor the Six-One News. Six-One News and the Nine O'Clock News are staples of the Irish viewing public where many get their news and they develop a deep relationship with these broadcasters and a great affection for them. I...
- Seanad: An Ghaeilge: Ráitis (25 Oct 2017)
Michelle Mulherin: I just want to speak in support of our native language and all the people who put in so much work and effort in communities scattered around this country, particularly Gaeltacht areas, but of course in cities also. It is the Gaeltacht areas, however, that keep the language going for us. Our own native Irish language is an essential part of our national identity. We know that in this global...

- Seanad: An Ghaeilge: Ráitis (25 Oct 2017)
Michelle Mulherin: Tá rud beag ach an-tábhachtach le rá agam. In respect of speaking Irish, we all admit that we went to school and learnt Irish. I loved Irish and here I am speaking English today. I signed up to do an Irish class in the Oireachtas and, believe it or not, the only opportunity to do so was on a Thursday evening. Try as I might, I have so many engagements, as I am sure other...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Renewable Energy Directive: Discussion (24 Oct 2017)
Michelle Mulherin: I have a number of questions. I am conscious that yesterday an NGO called Friends of the Irish Environment was given leave in the High Court to take an action against the State for perceived failure on our climate mitigation actions. This country is generally coming under criticism in this regard. The witnesses are of course appearing today before an agriculture committee. Obviously we...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Renewable Energy Directive: Discussion (24 Oct 2017)
Michelle Mulherin: If I may clarify, apparently in east Africa an Italian company was given land by the Kenyan Government. People had been growing food there but they were displaced. There was a lot of consternation at the time which is why I am wondering what has happened. I assumed it was not the only example. It was an Italian company whose idea was to import it into Europe.
