Seanad: Local Government Reform Bill 2013: Second Stage (16 Dec 2013)

Mary White: I welcome the Minister. I wish to place my cards on the table by congratulating him on the initiative he has taken in the context of including quotas for women in the legislation. Ministers and politicians in general usually only have one or two opportunities during their lifetime to carve their names in stone. The Minister will be remembered for the initiative to which I refer. I am of...

Seanad: Local Government Reform Bill 2013: Second Stage (16 Dec 2013)

Mary White: The position of women would have remained the same if this proposed change to the law had not been introduced.

Seanad: Local Government Reform Bill 2013: Second Stage (16 Dec 2013)

Mary White: The Bill furthers the Government's agenda of centralising power and decision making at national level. Legislation to provide for real reform of local government would facilitate greater devolution of powers to local communities. The Local Government Reform Bill 2013 creates a democratic deficit at the heart of the Irish political system, bestows more power on unelected officials and...

Mary White: Well done.

Seanad: Order of Business (28 Nov 2013)

Mary White: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business (28 Nov 2013)

Mary White: Go raibh míle maith agat. I thank the Leas-Chathaoirleach for giving me the opportunity to once again raise the issue of the Russian adoption crisis in Seanad Éireann. The Minister, Deputy Fitzgerald has three weeks to fulfil her own words from her initiative, Putting Children First. She has three weeks to make a clear and courageous decision to save stranded children in Russia...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Business of Joint Committee (21 Nov 2013)

Mary White: We have been active on this project. Both Governments have committed to going ahead with it. It is in their hands. There is a small Unionist group that does not want it to go ahead, however. We are going back to the same old thing again.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Business of Joint Committee (21 Nov 2013)

Mary White: I am not disagreeing with the Deputy. It is up to our Government and the Executive in the North to prevent this EU funding from being stopped, however. That is the key to it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Business of Joint Committee (21 Nov 2013)

Mary White: Senator Jim D’Arcy has been fighting for this relentlessly.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Business of Joint Committee (21 Nov 2013)

Mary White: It is a serious matter.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Ex-Prisoners and Conflict Transformation: Discussion with Community Foundation for Northern Ireland (21 Nov 2013)

Mary White: I wish to follow up on the issue raised by Ms Gildernew. She raised the issue previously of adoption for women who have been in prison and we do not seem to have followed up on it. Why can we not take it up and do something about it? Martina Anderson can be an MEP but she cannot adopt a child. For God’s sake. I am sure you remember, Chairman, that we had such a discussion a year...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Ex-Prisoners and Conflict Transformation: Discussion with Community Foundation for Northern Ireland (21 Nov 2013)

Mary White: What do you think we should do, Chairman? What action can we take on the issue?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Challenges in Urban Belfast: Discussion (21 Nov 2013)

Mary White: I thank the three delegates for coming. It is not long since a particular Moderator of the Presbyterian Church thought all of us down here had horns or that we were all chancers. I will not mention his name. It says a great deal that the delegates are here today.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Challenges in Urban Belfast: Discussion (21 Nov 2013)

Mary White: Thank you, Reverend Hamilton. I agree with Deputy Martin Ferris that the Loyalist side needs political leadership. In the past there was stronger leadership on the Loyalist side, but it did not grow. I have never been more impressed by a picture in The Irish Times than I am by the picture of the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Mairtín Ó Muilleoir, carrying out his civic duty, standing...

Seanad: Report on Grocery Goods Sector: Motion (20 Nov 2013)

Mary White: The multiples will be represented at the forum on revitalising retail that I am hosting. Ms Breda Cahill, whom I mentioned earlier, will be at the forum as a small independent retailer. Damien O'Reilly of DIT's school of retail and services management will also be there. The establishment of Lir Chocolates was an eye-opening experience for me. This is very important, a Chathaoirligh.
