Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Project Ireland 2040: Discussion (22 Mar 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: I welcome the departmental officials and thank the joint committee for taking on board my recommendation that Drogheda be added to the national development plan. It would not have happened without the support of people like Senator Victor Boyhan. I also compliment the officials for listening to me. As they know, I do not always agree with them and vice versa, but in this case they have got...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Project Ireland 2040: Discussion (22 Mar 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: I had to get that in and was just checking that members are wewake. The point is that the needs of places such as Drogheda as a significant regional growth centre will have to be addressed in the context of local government reform. The conundrum which has not yet been resolved and is hugely pressing locally is that it extends across two boundaries, the boundaries of County Louth and County...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Project Ireland 2040: Discussion (22 Mar 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: They first have to get through the game between Louth and Meath. The plan recognises the individuality and identity of each county. To develop a centre for shopping, recreation, amenities and education services we have to find a formula that will works because there is a total disconnect between east Meath and Navan and east Meath and Drogheda. We are much closer together than the boundary...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Project Ireland 2040: Discussion (22 Mar 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: In reply to my good friend and colleague, Deputy Barry Cowen, the national spatial strategy should have been revised once its cycle came to an end, as he rightly noted. It was a disastrous strategy because very few of the designated areas actually became growth areas. Drogheda which had been omitted from it heretofore actually grew to become the biggest town in Ireland. That is how wrong...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Project Ireland 2040: Discussion (22 Mar 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: The Department could send it on.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Project Ireland 2040: Discussion (22 Mar 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: They were not all made available. My one was not included initially. I am only joking when I point that out, but I had to chase it up.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Project Ireland 2040: Discussion (22 Mar 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: That would be too strong. There was an error by the consultant who did not include it.

Fergus O'Dowd: The Dáil referred the Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill 2017 to the select committee on 18 January 2018. The committee commenced its consideration on Committee Stage at the meeting on 28 February last. Today, we will continue our consideration of the Bill and then report back to the Dáil. Select Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (21 Mar 2018)

Fergus O'Dowd: That is a fair point. The Minister said at the last meeting that he would have that amendment for members of the committee. Can he give us an update on it? In the interest of transparent and open debate, it is important that members see his amendment before it can be fully debated. It probably cannot happen on Committee Stage now unless we adjourn it until he can show it to us.
