- Seanad: Order of Business (14 Nov 2013)
Paul Coghlan: Of course, I have questions for him. Mention was made on the benches opposite of certain other matters. I am confused by Senator Rónán Mullen's remarks on Newbridge Credit Union. There is a State bailout amounting to €54 million. We want credit union services to be provided in every town in the country within the norms for credit unions but not for €500,000 in...
- Seanad: Order of Business (14 Nov 2013)
Paul Coghlan: I was slightly amused by Senator Darragh O'Brien's remarks. We all welcome the ECB interest rate reduction, but I must inform the Senator that we cannot continue to babysit or micro-manage the banks. The banks are independent and they must become profitable again in order that the State can be paid all of it money it is owed.

Paul Coghlan: One needs a licence to do so.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Nov 2013)
Paul Coghlan: I find Senator MacSharry's suggestion worthy of merit and no doubt the Leader will comment on it. In light of the two financial scandals that have been highlighted in recent days involving Royal & Sun Alliance insurance and the credit unions, I believe it would be appropriate that we would review how the Central Bank handled both in order to see what lessons, if any, were learned...
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Nov 2013)
Paul Coghlan: Taxpayers are exposed to the tune of €54 million because of what has happened in Newbridge. The people's trust has undoubtedly been betrayed. It would appear to me that it was reckless lending that forced the State bailout. It is not good enough. We have to hear more from the Central Bank on the issue, which is something that we should pursue later.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Local Property Tax: Discussion with Revenue (7 Nov 2013)
Paul Coghlan: Given that the Minister stated he would prefer to see the money rolling in next year as it is a tax for next year and that Revenue allows it to be paid by lump sum on 21 March by cheque, surely there must be a way to allow a person to opt to pay a lump sum on 21 March by credit or debit card.

Paul Coghlan: With respect, is this not as safe as a cheque?

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Local Property Tax: Discussion with Revenue (7 Nov 2013)
Paul Coghlan: I do not mean cases where the customer is prepared to give Revenue the authority on the date to take the money.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Local Property Tax: Discussion with Revenue (7 Nov 2013)
Paul Coghlan: Revenue does not trust them to get in touch on that date to do it.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform: Local Property Tax: Discussion with Revenue (7 Nov 2013)
Paul Coghlan: If customers opt for this method now, Revenue does not trust them to do it on the date to get over the data protection issue.
- Seanad: Order of Business (7 Nov 2013)
Paul Coghlan: I am concerned, as I am sure is every Member of the House, about a ruling Mr. Justice Henry Abbott made some time ago and which was released last night. He felt it incumbent on him to refer to entirely inappropriate interference, allegedly by another judge and a politician, in a family law case in which he had been involved. That is a serious matter, and it has been touched upon by those on...

- Seanad: Oireachtas (Ministerial and Parliamentary Offices) (Amendment) Bill 2013: Second Stage (Resumed) (6 Nov 2013)
Paul Coghlan: A workspace.
- Seanad: Oireachtas (Ministerial and Parliamentary Offices) (Amendment) Bill 2013: Second Stage (Resumed) (6 Nov 2013)
Paul Coghlan: It is not unknown for that to happen, as I well know. My point is that one is expected to be more available in the country and people are more inclined to approach their public representative, regardless of whether he or she is a Deputy, a Senator or a councillor. As Senator Norris said, the matter should be decided by an independent assessor or whoever is appropriate. We are not looking...
- Seanad: Oireachtas (Ministerial and Parliamentary Offices) (Amendment) Bill 2013: Second Stage (Resumed) (6 Nov 2013)
Paul Coghlan: I welcome the Minister and thank him for his overview of this brief Bill. I recognise what the Minister is trying to achieve. Stabilising the cost of the public service is a goal we all share while at the same time supporting the democratic process by means of the support payments that are made to political parties for research, training and so forth. I welcome that because we all have...
