- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Completion of the Examination of the Report and Recommendations of the Citizens' Assembly and Preparation of a Draft Report in accordance with the Terms of Reference of the Joint Committee (13 Dec 2017)
Hildegarde Naughton: I agree with the amendment in the case of fatal foetal abnormality and that we ensure we cater for it. I agree with Deputy O'Connell as I do not see it tying the hands of the Oireachtas. I am open to this and will support her amendment. Any parents would welcome having two specialists giving them expert advice.

Hildegarde Naughton: I would be very much in favour of decriminalising abortion. I would agree with the motion of Deputies Kelleher and Lisa Chambers and Senator Ned O'Sullivan, motion 37. My only concern would be to add something in because of the chilling effect the witnesses - the medical experts who appeared before the committee - spoke about. They are qualified medical professionals who act in good faith....

Hildegarde Naughton: If it helps the motion, I propose to insert that it be only "qualified medical professionals acting in good faith".
Hildegarde Naughton: I propose that medical professionals who are qualified to carry out this work who are acting in good faith would be protected. They are qualified, not people struck off, for example, acting in good faith.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Statements by Committee Members on Recommendations oif Citizens' Assembly (6 Dec 2017)
Hildegarde Naughton: I start by commending the Chairman on the way she has handled these proceedings from the outset. It was very clear to everybody, even before we started, that this was not going to be an easy process. It is not an easy matter to deal with. I take this opportunity to commend the clerk, the secretariat and all the witnesses who came before us. It has been a very worthwhile exercise. We...

Hildegarde Naughton: If the committee votes next week not to repeal the eighth amendment what happens then?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Business of Joint Committee (29 Nov 2017)
Hildegarde Naughton: I agree with that and I think it is also in line with Deputy O'Brien's proposal that we vote the week after next so that we can spend time next week discussing the totality of what we have learned recently. I also agree that our report should be short and to the point and should provide a clear indication of what the committee is recommending to Government without getting into nitty-gritty...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Termination in Cases of Foetal Abnormality: Mr. Peter Thompson, Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital (29 Nov 2017)
Hildegarde Naughton: I thank the witness for appearing before the committee. He has provided answers to many of my questions. An Irish clinician who has dealt with women who travelled to the United Kingdom for abortions appeared before the committee. For legal reasons, such doctors cannot refer the medical files of such women to a doctor in the United Kingdom. That may give rise to difficulty in the case, for...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Termination in Cases of Foetal Abnormality: Mr. Peter Thompson, Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital (29 Nov 2017)
Hildegarde Naughton: The legal implications in Ireland regarding referring medical files that prevent doctors being able to give the best medical information to a treating doctor in the United Kingdom for a woman who chooses------

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Ancillary Recommendations of the Citizens' Assembly Report: Discussion (29 Nov 2017)
Hildegarde Naughton: Following on from the Chairman's comments, my point relates to teacher training colleges. What is the training with regard to sex education in the colleges when a teacher embarks on his or her training in university? Will the witnesses expand on what they are told to teach and how to go about it? I imagine that for many teachers, it could be a very difficult subject to broach with their...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution: Ancillary Recommendations of the Citizens' Assembly Report: Discussion (29 Nov 2017)
Hildegarde Naughton: In other words, teachers opt in to it, which is precisely the issue because not every teacher is engaging. We need to do much more work in this area. I accept that there have been improvements but, as I said, there is much more to be done in relation to sex education and not, by the way, only for our young people, but right across the board. We heard from medical people over the past...

Hildegarde Naughton: I welcome everyone here this evening. I propose that the meeting will follow the following order. We will resume our discussion with An Post on the post office network that took place on 17 January. We will then have a five minute break to allow the witnesses to leave the room and then resume in private session. Next we will have another five minute break to allow a new witness to take...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Post Office Network: Discussion (Resumed) (28 Nov 2017)
Hildegarde Naughton: I thank Ms Cooley very much. I might start with a few questions and then bring in the Deputies and Senators. If anyone wants to come in on any particular question, just indicate to me. Mr. McRedmond stated that he wanted a post office within 15 km of every household in rural areas and 3 km in urban areas, and a post office in every town with a population in excess of 500 inhabitants....
