Committee on Public Petitions: Financial Services and Pensions Ombudsman Annual Report 2021 and Related Matters: Financial Services and Pensions Ombudsman (4 May 2023)

Pat Buckley: It is about accountability, responsibility and proper rules and regulation, proper security procedures and so on. If they are failing on that then there is an issue. That is excellent.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (4 May 2023)

Pat Buckley: Can I suggest if we are reverting with correspondence that we flag that, following our conversation there with the Financial and Pensions Ombudsman, it might be another avenue?

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (4 May 2023)

Pat Buckley: Absolutely. It is the right way to go. We just heard it in the conversation earlier.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (4 May 2023)

Pat Buckley: Agreed.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (4 May 2023)

Pat Buckley: None other than there is a substantial amount of work in that and it will be interesting to see how it progresses.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (4 May 2023)

Pat Buckley: It is an issue with retention, but it is expensive to live in the country and it is not very good when people are starting out. It is the same with apprentices and so on. I used to always ask whether this could be beneficial or cost-neutral. If these people are not going to continue working, not going into apprenticeships or not working at all, they are going to be signing on. Would it...

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (4 May 2023)

Pat Buckley: There is a lot of work in that. We just had a chat about accountability and responsibility and here is something being pushed back. If we go back to one of the responses, such as the one dated 9 March 2023, it states: ... this Department will continue to keep a range of income supports provided to family carers under review [...] However, any changes to these supports would have...

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (4 May 2023)

Pat Buckley: It should be about the basic needs of those people. We are getting the runaround. I am disappointed with that response.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (4 May 2023)

Pat Buckley: Crazy.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (4 May 2023)

Pat Buckley: It is madness.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (4 May 2023)

Pat Buckley: I cannot understand why it cannot work like the cross-Border initiative that is in place. That goes for assessments across every sector. It is a nice one to keep following. An external complaints system is called for. We can see from the departmental response that not enough information is being delivered. I will be interested to see what response comes back on that.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (4 May 2023)

Pat Buckley: Paying taxes.

Support for Household Energy Bills: Motion [Private Members] (3 May 2023)

Pat Buckley: I listened to the Minister's response to the first speakers. I went through his amendment to compare it to the motion, which is a simple little two-pager. When I say "simple", I mean that it calls for the introduction of a windfall tax, the provision of financial relief and certainty for householders, the reversal of the increase in carbon tax and the provision of new regulatory powers to...

Support for Household Energy Bills: Motion [Private Members] (3 May 2023)

Pat Buckley: The news is that the impact of the decision to unwind the rebalancing is estimated to reduce an average domestic customer's annual bill by €40. This is what the Government's amendment calls for. The Minister has already heard speakers this evening. Everybody struggles with household debt. A recent interesting article stated that fuel poverty equals household poverty equals child...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy (Resumed): Discussion. (25 Apr 2023)

Pat Buckley: I do not have a question but I have an observation. I thank Ms Dada for telling her own story. That is not easy. This committee is concerned with learning and also listening to witnesses so members can be more informed about what is happening. I understand where Ms Dada is coming from concerning family members not accepting her bona fides and that it is necessary to wait so long to even...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy (Resumed): Discussion. (25 Apr 2023)

Pat Buckley: I congratulate all the witnesses on this very interesting meeting. We have heard we have the world's first multidisciplinary non-profit organisation and a world first on books published. An awful lot of work has been done in this regard. Just listening to all the witnesses speaking, it is evident that the problems are all being identified but it seems none of them are being addressed....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy (Resumed): Discussion. (25 Apr 2023)

Pat Buckley: We have to have a wider conversation about this. People outside of this committee and others - including me before I read the notes this morning - may not be aware that The Adult Autism Practice, Thriving Autistic and Neuro Pride Ireland even exist. These organisations have a wealth of knowledge and expertise and a willingness to share them, which is a vital ingredient.
