Seanad: Order of Business (18 Jul 2012)

Mary Moran: I agree with the Senator. Window-dressing will not do anything either.

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Jul 2012)

Mary Moran: Let us have a meeting.

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Jul 2012)

Mary Moran: I understand we will be having a meeting on Friday and I hope something good will come of it. I agree with the Senator that something needs to be done about it.

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Jul 2012)

Mary Moran: I also wish to raise something I mentioned on yesterday's Order of Business. Last week, it was reported that there were 190 deaths by suicide in County Cork between September 2008 and March 2011. I refer to just one aspect of the report which could be echoed throughout the country. It discovered that in the year before their death more than 80% of the people studied had been in contact...

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Jul 2012)

Mary Moran: I am coming to my question. I am concerned that people who suffer from depression may not seek the care or have the confidence to seek the care they need and bring up the subject with their GP. Greater training in the skills of recognising the signs of depression could go a long way towards saving the lives of vulnerable people.

Seanad: Services for People with Disabilities (17 Jul 2012)

Mary Moran: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. I wish to raise the severe cutbacks to the service provided by St. John of God services in Drumcar, County Louth, and the effect this is having on the users of the service. St. John of God north-east services provides for the care of people with an intellectual disability and this year alone the cutbacks to the service amounted to €1.5...

Seanad: Services for People with Disabilities (17 Jul 2012)

Mary Moran: The Minister of State spoke about minimising the impact, but a huge impact is already being felt. We are trying to keep everybody at home for as long as possible but reductions in services such as this will very often push families into making decisions about having to seek residential care for elderly parents who need care. They would prefer to look after them at home but cannot do so...

Seanad: Services for People with Disabilities (17 Jul 2012)

Mary Moran: Absolutely. She does and I agree with the Minister of State on this. I know how difficult the situation is but we need to keep highlighting it.

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jul 2012)

Mary Moran: I would like to echo the sentiments expressed by Senator Mooney when he called for the Minister of State with responsibility for disability services to come to the House. I spoke about the cut in services on the Order of Business yesterday and attempted to raise it on the Adjournment today. As I said yesterday, the families of some children with disabilities will now receive services three...

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Jul 2012)

Mary Moran: I echo the sentiments raised today by Senator Mary Ann O'Brien. It is an issue I raised last week, the awful situation in which parents of persons with a disability find themselves as a result of cutbacks, with no day service provision available unless specific funding is in place. Like Senator Mary Ann O'Brien and other Senators, I live in a world with children with a disability and...

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Jul 2012)

Mary Moran: No.

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Jul 2012)

Mary Moran: I am only saying that those who have been caught up in the dreadful situation through no fault of their own are innocent persons and they are being caught for the additional fees

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Jul 2012)

Mary Moran: I welcome the statement of the Minister, Deputy Varadkar, that he will pay for their air fares home, but we need to discuss this further.

Seanad: Qualifications and Quality Assurance (Education and Training) Bill 2011 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil]: Report and Final Stages (11 Jul 2012)

Mary Moran: I congratulate the Minister and Senator Averil Power. Her idea is fantastic and it will be a major improvement. I am pleased the Minister acceded to the request and also that the Union of Students in Ireland has been designated as the nominating body. That is the way to go.

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Jul 2012)

Mary Moran: I would like to raise the issue of the severe cutbacks in the service provided by St. John of God services in Drumcar, County Louth, and the effects they are having on the users of the service. St. John of God north-east services provides for the care of people with an intellectual disability. This year the cutbacks in the service have amounted to €1.5 million. Since 2005 it has had...

Seanad: School Transport (5 Jul 2012)

Mary Moran: I thank the Minister of State for coming to the Chamber to comment on the ongoing school transport problems experienced by a young lady from my constituency whose details I have submitted. She is 14 years old and has a history of monosomy 21, developmental delay and seizures and she is underweight. She attends a special school where she has settled in very well. Due to her medical...

Seanad: School Transport (5 Jul 2012)

Mary Moran: I am disappointed with this response. I had raised the issue before with the Minister for Education and Skills, Deputy Quinn, and submitted it to the Minister of State at the Department of Education and Skills, Deputy Cannon, as it was a school transport issue. It is important issues involving special educational needs are examined sensitively. I will pursue the matter further.

Seanad: School Transport (5 Jul 2012)
