Rónán Mullen: I intend to move amendment No. 25, God willing. For now I will speak to amendments Nos. 25 and 26. Amendment No. 25 is similar to that of Senator Ruane. The issue here is that we all want to support the Garda in the pursuit of its duties but in a democracy one always has to have regard to checks and balances and the need to ensure the work we entrust to the Garda is always done in a way...

Rónán Mullen: I move amendment No. 44: In page 21, line 19, after "the" where it firstly occurs to insert "technological specifications,". Here goes. Everyone should fasten their seatbelts. The Bill provides that the Garda and local authorities can apply to the Garda Commissioner for approval for CCTV in public places. This amendment seeks to insert a safeguard in the Bill that would make it...

- Seanad: Public Health (Tobacco Products and Nicotine Inhaling Products) Bill 2023: Second Stage (14 Nov 2023)
Rónán Mullen: I welcome the Minister. I am of a generation that did not grow up with vapes and therefore I find the whole thing a bit of a head scratcher when I am out for a run or going round the place and see people who are very young indeed with these nicotine inhaling products in their hands. There are many tragedies in this world and this is probably one of the lesser ones, but it is very...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying: Protecting Vulnerable Individuals from Coercion: Discussion (14 Nov 2023)
Rónán Mullen: My next question is for our guests from the National Suicide Research Foundation. I was very struck by the last key point in their opening statement regarding the lack of evidence for the effectiveness and standardisation of safeguards in the process of assisted dying, with a difficulty in identifying what safeguards would be deemed sufficient. That is almost, but perhaps not quite, saying...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying: Protecting Vulnerable Individuals from Coercion: Discussion (14 Nov 2023)
Rónán Mullen: Is the story so far that, contrary to what was claimed, there is not evidence of a reduction? The reduction that was suggested is that those who might otherwise choose unassisted suicide, for want of a better term, would have recourse to assisted dying and, therefore, it would be a more benign experience. That does not seem to have been established.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Assisted Dying: Protecting Vulnerable Individuals from Coercion: Discussion (14 Nov 2023)
Rónán Mullen: My friend, Deputy Gino Kenny, has said we should not think of this issue in the context of the suicide debate at all. I am characterising or paraphrasing what he said. Do the witnesses think this is an issue with which we must continue to wrestle?

That is a strong problem to be considered. What I am taking away from today, and I ask the...
