Seanad: Radiological Protection (Amendment) Bill 2018: Committee and Remaining Stages (30 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: I appreciate Senator Grace O'Sullivan's amendment because it brought forth a comprehensive response from the Minister. He takes this issue very seriously, and rightly so given the dangers of radon. I am delighted the Senator will not press the amendment because the Minister has promised to report back. With regard to the effect of radioactivity on Ireland following Chernobyl, we were very...

Seanad: Radiological Protection (Amendment) Bill 2018: Committee and Remaining Stages (30 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: I thank the Minister for bringing the Bill through. I would like to see speedy progress of Bills such as this because too many Bills are being held up in the system. I am delighted the Minister has got it through. For clarification, I understand this Bill has yet to go to the Dáil and I hope it gets through the other Chamber. The Minister might clarify that point.

Seanad: Radiological Protection (Amendment) Bill 2018: Committee and Remaining Stages (30 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: Therefore, it is now passed and is going for early signature, as such. I welcome that. I congratulate the Minister on bringing the Bill through. It is very important that these responsibilities are clearly in his domain and that we can allow for delegation of responsibilities, given the new additions to his ministerial title. I wish him well on that. Well done.

Seanad: Community Banking System: Statements (30 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: I thank the Minister for being present for this debate on postal services and particularly local post offices, which are very close to all our hearts. As a former Minister of State at the Department of Posts and Telegraphs in 1982, I had a very close relationship with the postmasters' union and the post office system. Since that time, unfortunately, too many post offices have closed. In...

Seanad: Community Banking System: Statements (30 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: That may be because they do not have access to or knowledge of it. It takes a long time. Young people are highly proficient in this regard. As a Deputy representing Roscommon-Galway, the Minister knows there are many farmers who are required to submit applications online. Doing so is a daunting task. The service is available at a cost. It involves being prepared to pay because sending...

Seanad: Community Banking System: Statements (30 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: The Minister has a good memory. Unfortunately, the Land Commission has gone as well. The post office was very tightly fought over in different areas. It was always the responsibility of the Minister of the day to make appointments. I am sorry to see a major post office in Castlerea go into the private sector. It is doing a good job so I am not knocking it and I wish the people who got it...

Seanad: Community Banking System: Statements (30 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: I am discussing an area on which I am comfortable speaking.

Seanad: Community Banking System: Statements (30 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: I know the Senator is comfortable but he is out of time.

Seanad: Community Banking System: Statements (30 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: In fairness, Irish Rural Link is doing a very good job and I would listen to its advice and proceed with the banking system it proposes as quickly as possible.

Seanad: Community Banking System: Statements (30 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: They have been around for 2,000 years and they will still be there.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: European Committee of the Regions: Discussion (22 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: Which war?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: European Committee of the Regions: Discussion (22 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: I welcome the president of the European Committee of the Regions. I had the pleasure of meeting him last year at a meeting arranged by Micheál Ó Conchúir, the secretary general of the European Alliance, and at the British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly. I met him and the European Committee of the Regions. It is important that the committee is involved in this. I compliment...

Seanad: Order of Business (17 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: Well done.

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Corruption Offences) Bill 2017: Committee Stage (16 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: I agree with that proposal. Senator Clifford-Lee, who is our spokesperson on justice, outlined the position regarding the Bill and the fact that we are supporting it. We have great respect for Senator Boyhan, who is a great colleague, and we normally support his amendments in most cases. However, in this particular case we are not supporting his amendment because we are anxious that this...

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Corruption Offences) Bill 2017: Committee Stage (16 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: We are in favour of the Bill, in principle, and we will be supporting it. With respect to a former eminent senior counsel, he is here as a Senator, not as a senior counsel. His opinion and our opinions are equal in this House. I could not say that in respect of the Four Courts. He would have a superior approach there compared to us. I respect that is his opinion but the opinion of our...

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Corruption Offences) Bill 2017: Committee Stage (16 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: I apologise; I told our guests to turn off their mobile phones but I did not take my own advice. The Minister came to Castlerea in Roscommon and I am not very offended but I was not invited to any of the Minister's events. Knowing the Minister when he is outside the House, I was frankly surprised by that. He was in my area which I have represented for-----

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Corruption Offences) Bill 2017: Committee Stage (16 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: I was very encouraged by the fact that the Minister spoke about the possible reopening of the Tarmonbarry Garda station, which is on the crossing of the River Shannon-----

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Corruption Offences) Bill 2017: Committee Stage (16 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: It is very relevant to me and to the people of Roscommon.

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Corruption Offences) Bill 2017: Committee Stage (16 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: The Minister will be aware of a major robbery that took place in Strokestown. The bank was robbed and those involved went across the River Shannon without being stopped. Nobody stopped them.

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Corruption Offences) Bill 2017: Committee Stage (16 May 2018)

Terry Leyden: There is a Garda station in Tarmonbarry and I appeal to the Minister to reopen it. We would be equal then in this respect to the area covered by the Minister, Deputy Ross, when he opens Stepaside Garda station in Dublin, which is not a priority.
