Alison Comyn: I thank each and every one of the witnesses for coming here to make their presentation this evening. I hear their pain and I have felt it. Before I was a Senator, I spent three decades working in broadcasting and journalism and I have worked a lot of that time in regional news. I read out the death notices on LMFM and started in Navan community television all those years ago. I know...

Alison Comyn: We will talk about bringing in more revenue. It has been mentioned a couple of times - I am not sure if it was Newsbrands Ireland or Local Ireland - the introduction of a levy on global streaming platforms and tech companies to support domestic public service media. How would the witnesses propose to introduce that and implement it?

Alison Comyn: One of the things I found very frustrating in the last couple of years of working as a journalist was the misinformation and disinformation online. It is just such a battle. The facts are just not juicy enough for people anymore. I know there is a lack of trust which has come from that, which is really frustrating because obviously we have rules and regulations we are trying to adhere to....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Media, Communications, Culture and Sport: General Scheme of the Broadcasting (Amendment) Bill: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Jun 2025)

Alison Comyn: From my point of view and I think from everybody's point of view, the service that you provide while embedded in the community and the level of trust there are both completely invaluable. We have to protect this at all costs.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Media, Communications, Culture and Sport: Arts Council Grant Management IT System: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)

Alison Comyn: I apologise that I have only arrived now. I managed to catch the vast majority of their contribution online. I was not available to be called; I was entertained on a call at the time. I thank the witnesses for their candid responses to all the questions. Many of my queries have been answered. What I really would like to know is the impact directly on the artists. If I missed this,...

Alison Comyn: I have one final clear message to artists. Throughout the centuries, artists have struggled. They are still struggling. We are talking about basic income and I would certainly like to be pushing for a capital fund for artists similar to the sports funding. What is the Arts Council's clear message to artists off the back of such a financial travesty?
