- Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Early School Leavers (12 Jun 2025)
John Clendennen: I firmly believe the Minister has made great strides on the issue of school completion. Initiatives such as free school books, hot meals, transport and even the school clothing and footwear allowance announced this week are all helping to encourage more people to stay engaged in education. Youth services have an important role to play as well. Some of the initiatives Laois and Offaly...
- Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Early School Leavers (12 Jun 2025)
John Clendennen: While we see an increase in the youth population in Offaly, we also see an increase in youth dependency rates. That is a call more than ever before to see this funding allocated where it is needed most. In the context of the Minister’s previous role as Minister for Justice, if we can ensure this funding is allocated and effective, we mitigate the possibility of antisocial behaviour,...

- Committee on Enterprise, Tourism and Employment: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (11 Jun 2025)
John Clendennen: I apologise for missing a good bit of the meeting. The balancing act that we have is to ensure that we maintain an environment where enterprise is competitive and appealing and we remain a good place to invest and work. In that regard, we are leading the way with the many initiatives that we have introduced on employee benefits and welfare. In recent times, we have made a lot of good...
- Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Planning, Approving and Delivering Transport Infrastructure Projects: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)
John Clendennen: I thank the witnesses for coming in. I have a number of questions and they can pick them up as they like. Local Link is a fantastic service. Why was a decision taken not to build bus stops? We have a great service, which goes from town to town and it stops in many villages but there are no bus stops. It is shrouded in secrecy as to where the service is located. Who is responsible? Is...
- Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Planning, Approving and Delivering Transport Infrastructure Projects: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)
John Clendennen: But they are working during the day.
- Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Planning, Approving and Delivering Transport Infrastructure Projects: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)
John Clendennen: With all due respect, I come from a rural area. We must be pragmatic about this. The NTA must be radical in its approach because the current model is simply not working. We are leaving people in a situation where there is, in effect, a curfew after 9 p.m. That is the current situation with public transport in rural areas.

John Clendennen: How long will it take to cover the entire country?
- Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Planning, Approving and Delivering Transport Infrastructure Projects: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)
John Clendennen: I will come back in now in the interests of saving time. I cannot understand why we do not put more money into the rehabilitation of roads over peat foundations. Essentially, we are throwing good money after bad because of the limited life span. Where the work has been done, it has been exceptionally good and the feedback is very positive. I encourage the NTA to do more in that area. ...
- Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Planning, Approving and Delivering Transport Infrastructure Projects: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)
John Clendennen: Following up on my previous point, I formally request the action plan on the night-time economy, particularly from a rural perspective. I fully acknowledge the work that has been done in large cities and larger towns but how is it planned to actively address the issues that are there at the moment? There are towns and villages with literally no transport after dark. The night-time piece is...
- Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Planning, Approving and Delivering Transport Infrastructure Projects: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)
John Clendennen: My point is that the decision making lies with the Department and not with the local engineer. The local engineer could send five projects to the Department, but the Department basically gives it the green light. The councils literally have no decision-making power and are just the implementing partners, as such.
- Committee on Infrastructure and National Development Plan Delivery: Planning, Approving and Delivering Transport Infrastructure Projects: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)
John Clendennen: Essentially, the decision making will not be going back to the local authority.
