Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Extension of EU-UK Trade Agreement and Implications for the Irish Fishing and Seafood Industry: Discussion (12 Jun 2025)

Jennifer Whitmore: Perfect. I will have to take a look at that. In that regard, because Article 17 is an element of the current CFP that we could potentially utilise, it seems to me that we do not really utilise it to its full benefit. I do not know if we utilise it at all, actually. What are the witnesses' thoughts on that?

Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Extension of EU-UK Trade Agreement and Implications for the Irish Fishing and Seafood Industry: Discussion (12 Jun 2025)

Jennifer Whitmore: I was just saying, as regards the Common Fisheries Policy and Article 17, and with Mr. Conneely's organisation and the inshore and the smaller boats, what would he like to see? Obviously, the Government can apply Article 17. Is that something Mr. Conneely would like to see happen, and what would he like to see incorporated into that consideration?

Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Extension of EU-UK Trade Agreement and Implications for the Irish Fishing and Seafood Industry: Discussion (12 Jun 2025)

Jennifer Whitmore: I will dig down a little bit more into the issue of overfishing. It is not that Europe has allowed the Faroe Islands to fish, given them a quota or anything like that. They are just fishing there and Europe is not taking any action against them. Is that the thrust of it?

Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Extension of EU-UK Trade Agreement and Implications for the Irish Fishing and Seafood Industry: Discussion (12 Jun 2025)

Jennifer Whitmore: This comes back to what Mr. Lynch was saying about what the sanctions could be. The trade agreements seem to provide an obvious sanction. However, as with everything in Europe, these things move very slowly. Is there anything Ireland can do in our own right? Could a case be taken or something like that, if even just to highlight the issue?

Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs: Extension of EU-UK Trade Agreement and Implications for the Irish Fishing and Seafood Industry: Discussion (12 Jun 2025)

Jennifer Whitmore: As a State, should we not be saying that we do not want any discussions with Iceland while this is going on? Is that not another point of leverage? Iceland obviously wants an agreement.

Ending the Central Bank’s Facilitation of the Sale of Israel Bonds: Motion [Private Members] (11 Jun 2025)

Jennifer Whitmore: Week after week, for 20 months, we come into this Chamber and talk about the most recent act of depravity that we have seen rained down on the people of Gaza by Israel. We talk in this Chamber about children who have been shot in the head, children who have been shot in the chest by snipers, children who have had to battle their way out of fires while their siblings and parents burned behind...

Jennifer Whitmore: I welcome everyone here today. It is very important that we are having this discussion. I acknowledge the work of Jim Hurley, who has been speaking about this issue for 40 years. He is looking in today and I want to acknowledge that. I am very familiar with Lady's Island Lake. I am originally from Wexford town and I spent an awful lot of time there when I was much younger. We have had...

Committee on Climate, Environment and Energy: CLEAR Report on Lady's Island Lake: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)

Jennifer Whitmore: That is very welcome. I thank Wexford County Council and the NPWS for the leadership they are showing here. I hope we could write to the Minister and seek that mandate but I would also like each of the organisations to write to the Department or the Minister in their own right to say that they have attended this meeting today and it has been identified, and as a result of the work of...

Committee on Climate, Environment and Energy: CLEAR Report on Lady's Island Lake: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)

Jennifer Whitmore: I want to make a comment. This is my second term. I have been on committees for five and a half years. This is actually the most positive committee experience I have had in that time because I can actually see a potential movement and something coming out of this, which is really welcome. It is great that Wexford County Council is going to take the lead on this. The work that is done...

Committee on Climate, Environment and Energy: CLEAR Report on Lady's Island Lake: Discussion (11 Jun 2025)

Jennifer Whitmore: Yes. The NPWS would need approval from the Minister, Deputy Browne. As he is a Wexford man, hopefully he would be keen to see this happen. Similarly, the EPA will require approval. It might get a bit confusing but-----
