Pat Casey: I welcome everybody and thank them for their statements. I also welcome the wide and diverse groupings we have had throughout the consultation process - today is our last such consultation - which has been very interesting. I agree with what the rapporteur said about the library and research document. It would be no harm, when that is finalised, that it be sent to all the contributors. It...
- Seanad Public Consultation Committee: The Future of Local Democracy: Discussion (Resumed) (9 Jul 2024)
Pat Casey: It is all about trying to increase participation in local democracy. This is where we have to think about this third layer of government and what that is. Is it town councils or is it an expansion of the municipal district councils? We have to be honest with ourselves that the role of a councillor is now almost a full-time one. Pat Casey: I thank Senator Gallagher. Indeed, were I not in the Chair, I would say all of those things myself. However, when a Senator is in the Chair, he or she has to be neutral about all these things. I cannot heap praise on the Minister of State, but if I could, I would. I ask Acting Leader, Senator Gallagher to propose a suspension until 6.45 p.m.

- Seanad Public Consultation Committee: The Future of Local Democracy: Discussion (Resumed) (27 Jun 2024)
Pat Casey: I welcome everybody. It has been interesting, but I do not think we learned anything new this morning, that we did not hear about already throughout our consultation process. We did not hear about any silver bullets to solidly fix the situation. There were snippets of some. The key problem with local government is its financing.
