Committee on Public Petitions: Closure of Vital Health Services: Discussion (13 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: .... There are also parliamentary questions and you name it, not to mention the petititons. Ms Curtis is right. She mentioned suicides. Between 2000 and 2002, there were 69 suicides in east Cork. There were women aged 63, 54 and 33, and the rest were all male. That indicates the need. There was a 22-bed system, with 20 full-time beds and the two short-term-stay beds. It is a...

Committee on Public Petitions: Closure of Vital Health Services: Discussion (13 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: ...You should treat the person, not the problem. That is the issue here, and people outside of this committee should take that on board. I appeal to the HSE, especially the new board of the HSE for Cork and Kerry, to come down to the area. Ms Curtis is right that everybody should sit down at the table. As I have said before, we all make mistakes, but we should be brave enough to put up...

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (13 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: ...water system last week as a Topical Issue matter. The boil water notice has been lifted, but it was affecting 10,000 people. I would support inviting in those who are accountable and responsible in Cork County Council and Irish Water. I certainly agree with the recommendations of that petition.

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (13 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: I agree. There is a lot of work in that, given the response runs to more than eight pages. The responses from the Secretary General and the assistant chief executive of Cork City Council seem to be good enough. We will wait and see what the response of the petitioner is. I agree with the recommendation.

Investment in Football: Motion [Private Members] (12 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: ...a soccer match. We did not come out favourably from it. There is a very good story in sport helping communities and what it gives back. I am very proud of having taken part in a soccer match in Cork City FC's grounds in Turners Cross that involved Munster rugby players, Cork hurlers and footballers and Cork City League of Ireland stars. It was for raising awareness of mental health....

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (6 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: ...towns and cities, major ports and airports and population and tourist regions. The R624 ticks all those boxes. As the Tánaiste is aware, the problem is that funding for regional roads comes from Cork County Council. Belvelly Bridge is a bottleneck and more than €100 million of funding would be needed to upgrade the road. Under section 10 of the Roads Act 1993, the...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Water Quality (4 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: I thank the Minister of State for her response. Her statement is pretty similar to that in Cork Beo of 23 January; it just included fancy new words such as "coagulation, flocculation ... clarification [and] filtration system". When I previously had a response on this the filtration system and UV system were referenced. The previous excuse was that Irish Water was ordering a part. I...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Water Quality (4 Jul 2023)

Pat Buckley: ..., maybe two weeks ago here in Dublin, where there was a burst water main. It was on the national news. They had tankers out in a couple of hours, and yet for the past seven years these people in east Cork have not got as much as a bottle of water from Irish Water in compensation. They have spent thousands of euro in the past seven years. I genuinely think what is happening is not...

Nursing Home Care: Motion [Private Members] (27 Jun 2023)

Pat Buckley: ...recently from the son of Patrick Murphy, who is in his 99th year. Patrick worked for CIÉ for 40 years from 1949 to 1989. His job was as a ganger on the permanent railway between Cobh and Cork. He walked the line in both directions every two weeks with a heavy hammer and a large spanner to ensure that all the keys were in place and to tighten the bolts. His wife Mary died suddenly...

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Election of Cathaoirleach (21 Jun 2023)

Pat Buckley: ...today has to be an honour for her and her family. People talk about making history and setting down markers. The Senator has now made history and is now living history. When I was a member of Cork County Council, I was a member of the Traveller consultative committee and worked on various incidents and situations. I hope that, as with previous committees of which I was a member, such...

Pat Buckley: 234. To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if the NTA or TII have considered a park-and-ride-style model of transport to run from Youghal, County Cork, to the train station in Midleton, County Cork, so as to facilitate a proper public transport corridor to Cork city via the train to Cork city and beyond; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Pat Buckley: ...representatives, we have this information every year because we have a constituency dashboard. We have the Census information and can find out things like the average ages of children in east Cork, how many have a disability, how many children are in families, the age demographics and so on, so we can plan for school places. We can basically forecast what is going to happen and the...

Retained Fire Services: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (13 Jun 2023)

Pat Buckley: ...first responders. They do one of the most mentally and physically taxing jobs in the country, but I also want to make a point about the bravery of stationmasters, and I will quote from a report by Cork Beo last week as follows: 'I want people to understand the sacrifices we make' - Cork firefighter speaks out ahead of strikes "What’s it going to take? For somebody to lose their...

Committee on Public Petitions: An Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission Annual Report 2021: Discussion (1 Jun 2023)

Pat Buckley: It will have to be the smallest question. Given that the Senator is from Cork and speaks fast, this will be his final question.

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Postal Services (31 May 2023)

Pat Buckley: I thank the Minister for taking this matter this morning. I want to discuss the fact that the parcel offices in Midleton and Youghal, County Cork are to be relocated. The Youghal parcel office is to be relocated to Dungarvan, County Waterford, which is strange. An Post wants to move the Midleton parcel office to Little Island, which is now part of Cork city. If this goes ahead, there will...

Respite Care Services: Motion [Private Members] (30 May 2023)

Pat Buckley: ...and I would like to refer to them here. It was stated that the committee raised concerns regarding placements in St. Stephen's Hospital in Glanmire and St. Catherine's ward in St. Finbarr's Hospital in Cork, as these centres had received lower Mental Health Commission inspection compliance ratings than the Owenacurra Centre. Additionally, concerns were expressed in these minutes that...
