Seanad: Order of Business (8 Dec 2011)

In this regard, I welcome the Leader's efforts to persuade his colleagues in Government that the Seanad should have a primary role in the scrutiny of EU legislation. As I have pointed out before, 138 pieces of European...

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Dec 2011)

Mark Daly: Yes. I am calling for a debate on the Ballymurphy massacre. One of the most disturbing aspects of the case was that a priest, Fr. Hugh Mullan, was killed while waving a white cloth, an image familiar to us from photographs of the scenes in Derry on Bloody Sunday.

Seanad: Order of Business (7 Dec 2011)

Mark Daly: I support my colleague, Senator Fiach Mac Conghail, in his call for a debate on the proposed changes in respect of the disability allowance. I hope the House will see its way to facilitating that debate rather than accepting the proposal from the other side of the House that we wait for the departmental officials to do the driving and come back with their considered view. Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2011)

Mark Daly: I look forward to a debate on registration fees for third level colleges, an issue raised by other Senators. We are all familiar with the famous photograph which will become infamous from here to eternity of the Minister and then Deputy Quinn signing a pledge not to raise fees. It was a little like the Treaty of Limerick in that not only was the ink not dry but before he picked up the pen...

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2011)

Mark Daly: My colleagues have misinterpreted what I said. As we know, the EU-IMF bailout is a temporary measure. Other countries that have gone into such a programme, including the United Kingdom, have come out of it. The Government does not seem to have a counter-proposal to what will be proposed next Friday.

Mark Daly: I thank the Senator for admitting it.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2011)
