- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (18 Apr 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: As I said, there is €10 million available. That could fund an awful lot of work with an awful lot of parents' groups around the country.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (18 Apr 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: I welcome everyone to our second session. For the information of our witnesses, I wish to explain some limitations to parliamentary privilege and the practice of the Houses as regards references they may make to other persons in their evidence. The evidence of witnesses physically present or of those who give evidence from within the parliamentary precincts is protected, pursuant to both...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (18 Apr 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: I concur with my colleagues. Well done to the library service, in particular, for the excellent work done in Limerick. It needs to be replicated across the country. In my local authority area, in Longford, much good work has been done, but I ask whether it is being done across the country. The CCMA may be able to revert to the committee on the number of sensory rooms, etc., in the local...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (18 Apr 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: Could the CCMA make a proposal to the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage to provide more one-bedroom housing? I do not understand why it is not happening. There should be a specific allocation within the housing plans for each local authority. When they are working with developers submitting turnkey projects, a mix of one-bedroom and two-bedroom units should be included....

- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Challenges Facing Providers of Tourist Accommodation in Ireland: Discussion (29 Mar 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: I thank the Chair and apologise for being late. I was in and out of other meetings. From reading the opening statements and looking into the figures, they show that before Covid, we had 11.3 million annual visitors, €5.9 billion was spent in tourism and the sector employed 325,000 people. It is important to acknowledge the work done by both Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland to...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Challenges Facing Providers of Tourist Accommodation in Ireland: Discussion (29 Mar 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: I will give an example. I am the chair of Longford Tourism and we have for many years been trying to build up from the low base we were at. We have tried to build the product and build infrastructure on the ground to bring people to our county. CenterParcs has given us a huge lift in that regard. We have also worked a great deal on developing other projects, such as walkways and cycling,...

- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Challenges Facing Providers of Tourist Accommodation in Ireland: Discussion (29 Mar 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: On the issue of consultation and pre-legislative scrutiny of the Bill, it is positive that it has been delayed for nine months. I still strongly believe that we should push ahead with a register. This could be done in the medium term while discussions are ongoing about how to address the legislation. It is not the right time to bring it in. It needs to be parked. We discussed what was...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Challenges Facing Providers of Tourist Accommodation in Ireland: Discussion (29 Mar 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: There are increased costs at a local level for projects Fáilte Ireland is involved in funding. The witnesses will probably be familiar with the likes of the Knights and Conquests Heritage Centre project in Granard in north Longford. It has been funded by Fáilte Ireland and the Government to the tune of nearly €3 million from rural regeneration funding. We have now been hit...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Challenges Facing Providers of Tourist Accommodation in Ireland: Discussion (29 Mar 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: Could we proceed with legislation on that straightaway? Does it need to be in tandem?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Business of Joint Committee (28 Mar 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: Apologies have been received from Deputy Tully, who has asked Deputy Ó Murchú to substitute for her today. Before we start our business, I will read some formal notices. All those present in the room are asked to exercise personal responsibility to protect themselves and others from the risk of contracting Covid-19. I remind members of the constitutional requirement that members...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (28 Mar 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: Today we will resume our consideration of autism policy, especially regarding the services and supports provided by the State to autistic people. I would like to welcome our witnesses: Ms Julie Tonge, who is a disability officer in the access and lifelong learning centre in University College Dublin; and Ms Lisa Marie Clinton, who is the director of strategy and business development of adult...

Micheál Carrigy: Does either Deputy Ó Murchú or Deputy Collins have an additional question?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (28 Mar 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: On transitioning into college over two years, would there be any merit in something in this regard being marked on CAO applications or when college places are accepted? Ms Tonge indicated the colleges only find out about people when they are already in college, perhaps after several weeks. Would there be any merit in earlier notification? I do not know if putting this type of information...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (28 Mar 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: My apologies; I misunderstood that. UCD's supports, in providing this level of investment and making full-time occupational therapy available, are outstanding. Would Ms Tonge like to respond?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy: Discussion (Resumed) (28 Mar 2023)
Micheál Carrigy: I thank Ms Tonge. I was excited when I read Ms Clinton's introduction and what can be done. Has Ms Clinton engaged with NCSE or the Department responsible for special education with regard to the work she is doing at any stage? If so, has there been a response from them?
