Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Working Conditions and Skills Shortages in Tourism and Hospitality Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Apr 2022)

Shane Cassells: The year needs to be broken down into quarters rather than taken as a whole.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Working Conditions and Skills Shortages in Tourism and Hospitality Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Apr 2022)

Shane Cassells: I think that was one of the most significant contributions during the meeting. This morning was a very emotional one in the Chamber. We are sitting in the cold light of day of statistical analysis in this committee room. The Taoiseach and other political leaders spoke earlier about doing everything to respond in that humanitarian effort, and rightly so, but we are talking about an industry...

Shane Cassells: What percentage does the figure of 4,000 represent in terms of overall hotel bed accommodation in the country?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Working Conditions and Skills Shortages in Tourism and Hospitality Sector: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Apr 2022)

Shane Cassells: In respect of getting back to that 93% for this summer, people will be making bookings and they need certainty. A report broke last night that major hotels such as the Citywest Hotel could be designated for accommodation. What will that do in terms of the industry's ability to market the country with certainty for the summer market?

Seanad: Tourism: Statements (5 Apr 2022)

Shane Cassells: I welcome the Minister and thank her for the details she has outlined in respect of the tourism sector. One of the phrases she used towards the end was the "tourism ecosystem". She spoke about making sure we protect and grow that. It is a great phrase. It is something that has really grown over the past 20 to 30 years. When I started out in political life back in 1999 as a young...

Seanad: Support to Ukraine: Motion (30 Mar 2022)

Shane Cassells: Before I call on Senator Mullen to speak, I acknowledge and welcome to the Visitors Gallery Jarlath Fitzsimons, whose grandfather, the former Senator, Pat Fitzsimons, was a long-standing Member of this House.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Mar 2022)

Shane Cassells: I join the Acting Chairperson in extending my sympathies to our colleague, Senator Fitzpatrick, on the death of her father and our former colleague, Dr. Dermot Fitzpatrick. It is a sad time for her and all her family. Last Sunday, I was in Ennis watching the re-emergence of the great Meath football team and I thought to myself, God, the last time I was in Ennis was two years ago when the...

Shane Cassells: Is that agreed? Agreed.

Seanad: Consumer Protection (Regulation of Retail Credit and Credit Servicing Firms) Bill 2021: Second Stage (24 Mar 2022)

Shane Cassells: When is it proposed to sit again?

Seanad: Gambling (Prohibition of Advertising) Bill 2021: Second Stage (23 Mar 2022)

Shane Cassells: I thank Senator Wall. It is one of those occasions where nobody is at odds with each other in the Chamber. We are all speaking with a passion about this particular problem and have done so consistently over a long period. The speakers in this room have been consistent in that. I will take the time to pay tribute to the Minister of State, Deputy James Browne. He is the first Minister or...

Seanad: Gambling (Prohibition of Advertising) Bill 2021: Second Stage (23 Mar 2022)

Shane Cassells: I could park it there. When the Gold Cup and Cheltenham was over, I could park it. The Midlands Derby was the next day in Uttoxeter and I happened to see there was a horse running in it called Young Dev at 10/1. I was tempted. I can park it but there are people, part of whose brain is susceptible to that type of advertising, who cannot park it. Advertising, particularly online...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Broadcasting Authority of Ireland: Discussion with Chairperson-Designate (23 Mar 2022)

Shane Cassells: Thank you. I also thank Senator Carrigy. For housekeeping, I want to second the proposal by Senator Malcolm Byrne to write to Pauric Travers and Michael O'Keeffe with an expression of thanks on behalf of this committee. I call Deputy Imelda Munster.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Broadcasting Authority of Ireland: Discussion with Chairperson-Designate (23 Mar 2022)

Shane Cassells: I welcome and thank Ms Curtis and Ms Craig. I congratulate Ms Curtis on her appointment and thank both of our guests for their years of service to public service journalism. Ms Curtis said that, in lieu of the media commission report being published, the BAI will just get on, do its work as charged and meet its objectives. It is totally unfair to Ms Curtis, Ms Craig and the BAI that Ms...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Broadcasting Authority of Ireland: Discussion with Chairperson-Designate (23 Mar 2022)

Shane Cassells: Exactly. Are Ms Craig and Ms Curtis fearful, from a public perception point of view, about the value the public places on public service journalism? This will ultimately come down to charging the public and getting their buy-in for this. What value do they place on public service journalism because there is ultimately a cost associated with that? We see the massive evasion rates. There...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Broadcasting Authority of Ireland: Discussion with Chairperson-Designate (23 Mar 2022)

Shane Cassells: They want it for free. This is my point. They want it on their phones or tablets for free. It comes back to the public wanting newspapers for free on their tablets and not wanting to pay to get past the firewall to access them. Are they prepared to pay for public service journalism in the context of making sure that we fund it? I am sorry for cutting across Ms Curtis.

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Broadcasting Authority of Ireland: Discussion with Chairperson-Designate (23 Mar 2022)

Shane Cassells: Ms Curtis has touched on the heart of the issue and this goes back to my question. Is it the case that if we are going to protect public service journalism that we will have to bring it within the ambit of Exchequer funding to ensure we maintain standards? I refer to not ending up in a situation where we prostitute journalism to the extent we witness with Fox News, for example, where we...
