Seanad: Order of Business (20 Feb 2014)

Marie Moloney: Yes, but I am surprised he did not realise it, considering I brought forward a motion in this House, with cross-party support, on the very issue.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Feb 2014)

Marie Moloney: Fianna Fáil supported the motion and I highlighted the issue at the time.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Feb 2014)

Marie Moloney: Fair enough. Point taken.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Feb 2014)

Marie Moloney: Point taken but it was an issue I raised here before. We discussed it at length and there was cross-party support. I commend Senator Mulcahy for his honesty and bravery for speaking out on this matter. Sometimes it takes someone giving their personal experience for people to listen. I hope we will now move forward on this issue. Yesterday, the House had a good debate on A Vision for...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Quality and Standards in Schools: Chief Inspector at Department of Education and Skills (19 Feb 2014)

Marie Moloney: As I must also leave, I will be brief. I bow to the superior knowledge of Senator Mary Moran of this matter. My worst memory of primary school is of the days on which the cigire would visit. We were specially tutored, told to ensure our answers were correct and expected to be on our best behaviour. I never recall seeing an inspector during my secondary school days. I presume...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Education Progamme Fees: Quality and Qualifications Ireland (19 Feb 2014)

Marie Moloney: Does the provider of the course train the people in the nursing home or does the employer have to pay the cost of training?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Education Progamme Fees: Quality and Qualifications Ireland (19 Feb 2014)

Marie Moloney: Obviously these people are working because they are in a job that requires training.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Education Progamme Fees: Quality and Qualifications Ireland (19 Feb 2014)

Marie Moloney: I may be off the wall, so to speak, but the course has to be paid for. Is the cost falling on the employer? Will this be a significant expense for employers?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Education Progamme Fees: Quality and Qualifications Ireland (19 Feb 2014)

Marie Moloney: There will be a domino effect.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Education Progamme Fees: Quality and Qualifications Ireland (19 Feb 2014)

Marie Moloney: I too missed the start of the meeting because of the overlap with the debate in the Seanad. We have raised this with the Whips with the aim of ensuring that an education debate will not clash with a meeting of this committee on education, because it is not fair to the spokespersons, who must be in both places at the one time. I thank the witnesses for coming in today. I did not hear all of...

Seanad: Mental Health Services Provision: Motion (19 Feb 2014)

Marie Moloney: Not true. It is because the money has stopped.

Seanad: Adjournment Matters.: Home-makers Scheme (18 Feb 2014)

Marie Moloney: I thank the Minister for his reply. I would appreciate if the Minister could raise this matter with the Minister for Social Protection. I also propose to raise it with her. I raised it last week at a meeting of the Joint Committee on Education and Social Protection and at departmental level. The Minister cited a figures in respect of the cost of this measure. I would like to know how...

Seanad: Adjournment Matters.: Home-makers Scheme (18 Feb 2014)

Marie Moloney: I welcome the Minister. I would have preferred it had the Minister for Social Protection been present, but obviously-----

Seanad: Adjournment Matters.: Home-makers Scheme (18 Feb 2014)

Marie Moloney: I would have liked to have seen the Minister for Social Protection, Deputy Burton, attend debate but I will proceed in her absence. I tabled this matter because the budget moved the goal posts as regards qualifying for the State pension. Up to last year, a yearly average of 20 contributions would have given a person 95% of a State pension. With the graduation of rates of pay and bands,...

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Feb 2014)

Marie Moloney: Last Wednesday, we had statements on the extent of the damage done by the storm in Ireland and the associated costs. At that very time there was a hurricane-like storm raging through Kerry, whipping off roofs of schools, nursing homes and private homes and knocking trees in the national park, on golf courses and across every road in Kerry. We were a little premature with that debate and I...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Implications for Employees of Changes to Pension Age: Discussion (12 Feb 2014)

Marie Moloney: Some of my questions were answered but one of them was whether the Department had looked to 2021 and 2028 and whether people over the age of 66 would be required to pay PRSI at that stage also. We will probably have to change the legislation to implement that because, as far as I know, it has not been changed.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Implications for Employees of Changes to Pension Age: Discussion (12 Feb 2014)

Marie Moloney: That is what I said.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Implications for Employees of Changes to Pension Age: Discussion (12 Feb 2014)

Marie Moloney: That is what I said. Currently, if one is 66 years of age or over and is working, one does not pay PRSI.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Implications for Employees of Changes to Pension Age: Discussion (12 Feb 2014)

Marie Moloney: I presume things like the free travel scheme and the household benefits package will move in line with the old age pension. Will Dr. Quinn indicate whether the dependant adult allowance will move in line with it also? Mr. Whelan said one could work up to the day before one's 66th birthday. However, I understand that when one is calculating for a social welfare pension - a State pension -...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Implications for Employees of Changes to Pension Age: Discussion (12 Feb 2014)

Marie Moloney: When does Dr. Quinn think the Department will be in a position to present it to the committee?
