- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Offshore Wind Energy Strategy: Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (17 Apr 2024)
David Stanton: The report states that the vast majority of Ireland's exclusive economic zone, EEZ, is beyond the depth of fixed-bottom float and that floating is essential to achieve the targets.. Our understanding is that floating is a long way away and we are still waiting for it to be completed in the south. The technologies used for floating are different because it is further out and the conditions...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Offshore Wind Energy Strategy: Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (17 Apr 2024)
David Stanton: Mr. Tobin has talked about the Atlantic green energy test site off Mayo as a possible base for a centre for a demonstrator site of scale. He also mentioned, quite interestingly, that by 2040 this whole sector will need 86,000 full-time additional employees, which is amazing, and these will be very highly-trained technical people which is really exciting. He talked about the hydrogen...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Offshore Wind Energy Strategy: Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (17 Apr 2024)
David Stanton: My time is up so I wish our guests well with the strategy, which is really exciting. The strategy has recently been published and my only criticism is that the Department needs to publicise it more. The strategy contains such good and exciting stuff that I think a lot of our schools, colleges, industrialists, business people and ordinary citizens would be interested to see the thinking...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Offshore Wind Energy Strategy: Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (17 Apr 2024)
David Stanton: On the issue of perceived slowness, I have been speaking with some industry people who are interested in investing in Ireland, particularly in floating offshore facilities. They are concerned that the investment will go elsewhere, as Mr. Tobin has said. Anything we can do to push things forward and make them more attractive is important. The Celtic interconnector is being constructed in...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Offshore Wind Energy Strategy: Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (17 Apr 2024)
David Stanton: On the matter of getting companies involved in the sector, Circular 05/2023, entitled Initiatives to Assist SMEs in Public Procurement, was recently published by the Department of Public Expenditure, National Development Plan Delivery and Reform. I have come across companies that say they find it very difficult to tender and that have missed out on opportunities. Perhaps there is a role for...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Offshore Wind Energy Strategy: Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (17 Apr 2024)
David Stanton: I would really welcome that because they need to be at the table anyway initially to compete. Which company wins a contract is another matter. Mr. McDermot is right about the specialised ships required to build and service the infrastructure. I understand there is great demand for these kinds of vessels globally. We have got to be careful that we do not lose out and find we cannot get...
- Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Customs and Excise (16 Apr 2024)
David Stanton: I thank the Minister of State for a very positive response. I welcome the fact that the derogation has been granted temporarily in recent days for the import of melons, which I also mentioned in my presentation earlier. I also welcome the fact that it remains under consideration. I urge the Minister of State to deepen that consideration and make it viable. I understand that the cost of...
- Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Customs and Excise (16 Apr 2024)
David Stanton: I thank the office of the Leas-Cheann Comhairle for selecting this Topical Issue and the Minister of State for being here this evening. The Port of Cork plays a key strategic role in the economic life and development of the south and south-west regions. It is recognised as a port of national significance, tier 1. It is the Government's position that these ports are considered to be of...
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: School Accommodation (16 Apr 2024)
David Stanton: I thank the Minister for her response. I visited the Carrigtwohill second level school recently where the Minister turned the sod a while back. It is absolutely magnificent and amazing. It did take 12 years to open from the time the initial decision was made to build it. Has the Minister seen the two-year progress report on the Cork county development plan that was published last Friday?...
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: School Accommodation (16 Apr 2024)
David Stanton: I thank the Minister for her response. I would be interested to know if she could forward to me information on the school planning areas. She mentioned there are 314 of them, and I ask her to forward the details of the east Cork one to me at some stage. We know that many schools now have got extensions to extensions, and they are at capacity. My concern is that in five, six or ten years'...
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: School Accommodation (16 Apr 2024)
David Stanton: 64. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills her plans to establish a new second level school in the east Cork area; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16461/24]
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: School Accommodation (16 Apr 2024)
David Stanton: What plans does the Minister and her Department have for another second level school in east Cork? This is probably one of the fastest-growing areas in the country at the moment, with thousands of houses planned but many of the schools there are already at capacity, even though they have got fantastic extensions. I would be interested in the Minister's response.
- Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: Departmental Properties (16 Apr 2024)
David Stanton: 82. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills further to Parliamentary Question No. 145 of 14 February 2024, if she will consider supporting the provision of a playing pitch at that location; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16462/24]
- Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Traveller Education Policy: Department of Education (11 Apr 2024)
David Stanton: I thank the officials for the presentation, for the work they are doing and for being with us. A huge amount of work is going on. I read the material the Department sent us, which is quite comprehensive. There is a certain amount of déjà vu about this. In the previous NTRIS, there was a review and recommendations for a Traveller education strategy to be reviewed by the...
- Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Traveller Education Policy: Department of Education (11 Apr 2024)
David Stanton: I thank Ms O'Neill.
- Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Traveller Education Policy: Department of Education (11 Apr 2024)
David Stanton: It has been seven years. How many identified or self-identified Traveller children are in primary and secondary school at the moment?
- Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Traveller Education Policy: Department of Education (11 Apr 2024)
David Stanton: The submission refers to reduced school days, which caused a lot of concern in the past. There are restricted timetables. Schools have to inform the Tusla education support service when a student is placed on a reduced school day. What are the statistics in that regard? How many students are on a reduced school day? How many of those are Traveller or Roma children?
- Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Traveller Education Policy: Department of Education (11 Apr 2024)
David Stanton: That is the second level.
- Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Traveller Education Policy: Department of Education (11 Apr 2024)
David Stanton: Have our guests any information as to why those children were placed on reduced or restricted timetables?
- Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Traveller Education Policy: Department of Education (11 Apr 2024)
David Stanton: That is good. I know in the past it has caused a lot of anxiety, especially for mothers whose children were in school at 9 a.m. and gone at 10 a.m. There did not seem to be any kind of follow-up or connectivity but I am glad to hear it is being monitored closely now and that systems are in place to ensure that children are not on the streets when they should be in school or at home. How...
