Order of Business (6 Mar 2007)

John Gormley: I confirm that Deputy Cuffe was not contacted on this issue either. Has the Taoiseach considered the wider implications here? It is welcome that we are closing the loophole, but if we are approaching this sensitive subject in a piecemeal fashion, would it not make sense to sit down in Cabinet and look at the wider implications of Internet use for children?

Order of Business (6 Mar 2007)

John Gormley: I would simply ask that the Taoiseach state, when responding, whether he has thought about this in greater detail.

Order of Business (6 Mar 2007)

John Gormley: There is a lack of detail and this is being done repeatedly on the hop.

Order of Business (6 Mar 2007)

John Gormley: The Taoiseach has probably noted that there are fewer and fewer Members coming into the House.

Order of Business (6 Mar 2007)

John Gormley: On promised legislation, it does. It would be helpful if the Taoiseach, and the Government Whip, provided an outline at this stage, with 13 sitting days left, of the sort of legislation to be taken on those days.

Order of Business (6 Mar 2007)

John Gormley: The Government Whip is nodding in agreement. It would be helpful to all of us.

Order of Business (6 Mar 2007)

John Gormley: The Minister can regulate that. One Bill in which I am interested, and I want the Taoiseach to tell us if we will deal with it in the 13 remaining days, if we can believe that, is the Ethics Bill, which is to amend current ethics legislation to require officeholders and Oireachtas Members to seek the opinion——

Defence (Amendment) No. 2 Bill 2006: Second Stage (1 Mar 2007)

John Gormley: I join other Members in thanking the Defences Forces for the great work they do throughout the world, particularly at present in Lebanon and Liberia. It is no easy task. When we sent troops to Liberia with a UN mandate, it was a difficult decision and we were told in advance that they were entering a volatile situation. The situation is even more volatile in Lebanon, where, as I predicted...

Building Control Bill 2005: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (1 Mar 2007)

John Gormley: I move amendment No. 18: In page 9, to delete lines 57 to 59 and in page 10, to delete lines 1 to 19 and substitute the following: "(xi) that all new building, or existing buildings in respect of which an extension or a material alteration has been made, shall not be opened, operated or occupied or permitted to be opened, operated or occupied, unless a fire safety certificate and disability...

Building Control Bill 2005: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (1 Mar 2007)

John Gormley: I have used this phrase before on another matter. It has often been said that the professions are a conspiracy against the laity. What constitutes poor professional performance? We have encountered architects who have insisted on speaking to one at one's house, after which one is billed for an on-site meeting. As with all professions, it should be very clear to the customer exactly what...

Carbon Fund Bill 2006: Second Stage (Resumed) (28 Feb 2007)

John Gormley: I thank the Minister. When one looks back at what the party has said over those years one can see that it has been vindicated. I hope our time has come. I recall the debate about Moneypoint, when we spoke about the problems with sulphur and CO2. A gentleman from the ESB stood up at a public meeting and said that wind energy here would never work. He said the entire county would have to...
