Seanad: Undocumented Irish (15 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: I thank the Tánaiste for his response. It is a difficult area, with so many competing elements in Washington. I would like to impress on him that at some stage in the negotiations at committee level in the US Senate, we will be given an E-3 visa at the Australian entry level, which is degree level. We should with all our diplomatic might to say "No" to that. We can give way on the...

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: An excellent turn of phrase.

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: It was not an economic but a political decision to close it down.

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: I, too, support the amendment to the Order of Business. I also support Senator Ó Domhnaill's remarks in regard to our obligations to the victims of child abuse, in respect of which my record is well known. At a time when we are trying to get answers from the Holy See in terms of its role in the cover-up in this regard, the withdrawal of an embassy is not a positive step. The Ireland Stand...

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: I did not hear Senator Coghlan's comment but I hope he was not calling me what he was calling other people yesterday. Ireland Stand Up will appear before the foreign affairs committee in the near future. I agree with colleagues opposite that the Vatican issue while important is not more important than the issue of jobs and the jobs plan. While the Government previously promised a jobs...

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: On the issue of job creation. Government red tape is preventing the creation of jobs in several areas. It is not money but our processes that are failing us. If we cut the red tape, more jobs will be created. We do not need to keep injecting money into this, rather we need to cut the red tape.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: Let us study the Official Report to find out who said it was a bad thing.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: I second the amendment to the Order of Business proposed by Senator Walsh. It is curious that we extended an official invitation to the head of the Church of England and yet we do not seem to extend an invitation to the Pontiff. We invited Queen Elizabeth, who is the head of the Church of England, and extended her all the courtesy.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: To clarify-----

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: For clarification, the head of the Church of England is the Queen.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: It is the Queen.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: That is an item for another day. My point to Senator Colm Burke is that the Government has stated it will show every courtesy but will not extend an invitation.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: That is what the Taoiseach said. I thank the Leader for his answer on yesterday's Order of Business. I agree with his policy that only those in the Chamber should get a reply. The clarification was that the Taoiseach and Tánaiste will be seeking waivers for the undocumented Irish from the US Secretary of State, Mrs. Clinton, and President Obama when they travel to Washington. I thank him...

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: On the anniversary of the claim not to put in one more red cent, can we get clarification on whether the Attorney General-----

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: The Attorney General gave the Labour Party its advice when it claimed legislation would be introduced-----

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: ----- and that there was no need for a referendum on the rates reduction promised by Labour.

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: Was the Attorney General involved in that legal advice-----

Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: ----- because she is giving the advice on the referendum?

Seanad: Investment in Education: Motion (8 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: I support my colleague. The Government is disproportionately attacking Gaeltacht schools, and Protestant and minority schools. When the Minister says that small rural schools of four teachers and fewer should consider amalgamation, it tells us where he is at. Schools in my area in Lauragh, Realt na Mara, Tahilla and Banawn will all be affected as will schools throughout rural areas. We...

Seanad: Order of Business (8 Feb 2012)

Mark Daly: I wish to ask the Leader again for a debate on the undocumented Irish in America. I know we spoke about this matter on the Order of Business on Thursday, but the issue has moved on since then. The key to granting 10,500 E3 visas for Irish citizens now lies with Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts. Both the Taoiseach and the Tánaiste will be in America this week. The Tánaiste and...
