Bríd Smith: It is not the doubting that is the problem, it is the doing something about it.
- Other Questions: Diplomatic Representation (25 Oct 2016)
Bríd Smith: Ibrahim Halawa is outside the House.
- Other Questions: Syrian Conflict (25 Oct 2016)
Bríd Smith: I want to ask a question. My question to the Minister concerns the status of his recent efforts to secure the release of Ibrahim Halawa. However, I heard her answer to Deputy Eamon Ryan. I want to quiz him a bit further on that answer because there is no point in him telling me again that he must Mr. Soukry on 24 September and again in New York on 2 October.
- Other Questions: Syrian Conflict (25 Oct 2016)
Bríd Smith: I am saying there is no point in saying that again.
- Other Questions: Syrian Conflict (25 Oct 2016)
Bríd Smith: I want to ask the Minister specifically-----
- Other Questions: Syrian Conflict (25 Oct 2016)
Bríd Smith: I did not imply that. I am sorry. The Minister misunderstands me. I am saying there is no point in him repeating the same information because I heard it already. When the House met on 7 July, we passed an all-party motion on the question of Ibrahim Halawa and what the House might be able to do. During the debate, the Minister said more or less the same, namely, that he and his...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (25 Oct 2016)
Bríd Smith: I am sorry I was not present for all the presentations. One question that bothers me is how we see joined-up thinking on climate change and reaching our targets. I was alarmed when I read the EPA report, and I am sorry I missed that presentation. The report clearly showed that it is estimated we will be between 9% and 14% below targets by 2020. On the one hand, that is very serious. On...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposals (25 Oct 2016)
Bríd Smith: I wish to comment on that. Dr. O'Neill talked about funding and fiscal space but there are also the political decisions that are made to facilitate the big for-profit industries, such as the beef industry I mentioned. I am not talking about the ordinary farmer with five cows going up a lane, but big ranchers who engage in the production of beef on a massive scale for export. The export of...
- Syrian Conflict: Statements (20 Oct 2016)
Bríd Smith: When I proposed that we would have this debate in the absence of the Bill from Fianna Fáil, I did so in order to allow this House to reflect on what the people and the Government can do in terms of intervening in a conflict that is utterly horrendous. Words fail me to describe the barbarity of what has gone, and continues to go, on in Syria on a daily basis. I was disgusted by the...

Bríd Smith: 16. To ask the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht an bhfuil sí ag diúltú maoiniú a dhéanamh ar an bplean infheistíochta, a comhaontaíodh idir 80 grúpa Gaeilge agus Gaeltachta, Údarás na Gaeltachta agus Foras na Gaeilge san áireamh, ós rud é go bhfuil sé soiléir ón mbuiséad nach bhfuil na...

Bríd Smith: 45. To ask the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht an bhfuil sí sásta go mbeidh a thuilleadh ciorruithe ar scéimeanna Fhoras na Gaeilge in 2017 ós rud é nach ndearnadh aon mhéadú ar an maoiniú dóibh i mBuiséad 2017 agus gurb airde costais an bhliain seo chugainn nuair a chuirfear breisithe tuarastail foirne agus costais is airde...

Bríd Smith: 25. To ask the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform if any account was taken in preparing his Budget Statement of the need for wage increases among public service workers outside of the already planned unwinding of financial emergency measures in the public interest, FEMPI, provisions by his Department. [30933/16]
- Other Questions: Public Sector Staff Remuneration (19 Oct 2016)
Bríd Smith: That was an interesting answer to a question I did not get to introduce. The Minister has had to answer a lot of questions today about the Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland and the Garda Síochána unions that are outside the Lansdowne Road agreement. It is my understanding that olive branches are being offered to Garda representatives and some attempts are being made to...
- Other Questions: Public Sector Staff Remuneration (19 Oct 2016)
Bríd Smith: My question has absolutely nothing to do with any need of mine to focus on a particular issue. However, if I wanted to ask a question about those inside the Lansdowne Road agreement, I would do so.
- Other Questions: Public Sector Staff Remuneration (19 Oct 2016)
Bríd Smith: I asked the Minister how he proposes to make provision for those workers who are outside the agreement. He acknowledges the right of every trade union to vote according to its beliefs. I remind the Minister that members of TUI and INTO did not get to ballot on the new arrangements. It was the leadership of those unions which accepted the deal, not the membership. In the case of the...

Bríd Smith: The Minister is supposed to be replying to my question.
- Other Questions: Public Sector Staff Remuneration (19 Oct 2016)
Bríd Smith: I did not ask about those who are inside the agreement. My question relates specifically to those who are outside it.
