Seanad: Children and Family Relationships Bill 2015: Second Stage (24 Mar 2015)

David Norris: I will use the half minute to raise another question.

Seanad: Children and Family Relationships Bill 2015: Second Stage (24 Mar 2015)

David Norris: The rights being offered for children with a known donor are limited to the non-biological parent being able to apply only for guardianship and only after two years. This blocks a pathway to parentage that other donor children are being offered. Guardianship offers far fewer rights for the children. Finally, I have received another communication that states:Children conceived in Irish...

Seanad: Children and Family Relationships Bill 2015: Second Stage (24 Mar 2015)

David Norris: There are crackpots everywhere.

Seanad: Children and Family Relationships Bill 2015: Second Stage (24 Mar 2015)

David Norris: On a point of order and for the edification of Senator Quinn, could I put on the record that I caused a survey to be done by Gay Community News? In a survey of several thousand people, it found that 96% were strongly in favour of gay marriage, 2% were a little confused and 4%, a tiny number, were against it for some daft reason. Where these nutcases are fished out from I simply cannot imagine.

Seanad: Workplace Relations Bill 2014: Committee Stage (Resumed) (5 Mar 2015)

David Norris: I move amendment No. 133: In page 69, between lines 19 and 20, to insert the following: "Accessibility of hearings for those with a disability 87. Any premises used for the purposes of a hearing by an adjudication officer of the Labour Court or for the purposes of any mediation or case resolution meeting shall be suitable for access by persons with a disability.".This is fairly...

Seanad: Workplace Relations Bill 2014: Committee Stage (Resumed) (5 Mar 2015)

David Norris: I suppose I will have to accept that, but it would be no harm to stick it in , because it is a signal to people with disabilities that they are properly and duly regarded. I will have to accept that, as the Minister of State says, it is covered by the Disability Act. On the other hand, the Disability Act does not always work. There are places where people do not have ready access for a...

Seanad: Workplace Relations Bill 2014: Committee Stage (Resumed) (5 Mar 2015)

David Norris: That is no problem.

Seanad: Workplace Relations Bill 2014: Committee Stage (Resumed) (5 Mar 2015)

David Norris: I move amendment No. 137: In page 70, between lines 6 and 7, to insert the following:“(c) in section 26 in line one, after the word “penalised”, to insert “or threaten to penalise”.”.The Minister of State has already spoken on this issue, but I am a little concerned that the Government seeks so narrowly to control the scope of the Bill. I believe it...

Seanad: Workplace Relations Bill 2014: Committee Stage (Resumed) (5 Mar 2015)

David Norris: They all are Government amendments.

Seanad: Workplace Relations Bill 2014: Committee Stage (Resumed) (5 Mar 2015)

David Norris: From the Government side.

Seanad: Workplace Relations Bill 2014: Committee Stage (Resumed) (5 Mar 2015)

David Norris: Exactly. They were Government amendments.

Seanad: Workplace Relations Bill 2014: Committee Stage (Resumed) (5 Mar 2015)

David Norris: Absolutely.

Seanad: Workplace Relations Bill 2014: Committee Stage (Resumed) (5 Mar 2015)

David Norris: I do not accept that for a minute, because "penalise" is already included. That is clear. How much consultation does one need on that? I do not see any need whatever for consultation on that, because it is merely an extension of the idea of penalising. This is another way of penalising, and it is spelling it out. The Minister of State agrees with it; it is merely that he will not accept it.
