Maternity Leave Benefit Extension: Motion [Private Members] (14 Jul 2020)

Paul Murphy: One woman, Emma, wrote that they brought their baby home on 27 March where their adoring family looked at her through a window and that their hearts were broken not being able to share their miracle baby with their family. She says she was so upset and so sad she could not even hold her mother, that she was on her own for all of the labour except for ten minutes and that her husband barely...

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (14 Jul 2020)

Paul Murphy: This is a transparent attempt to kick this off the agenda for a year. That is how long we are talking about. It is a question of accountability to the Dáil. The Minister, Deputy Cowen, has made very serious statements about the veracity of what is contained in the Garda record. He is currently a Minister and he has to be accountable to the Dáil. If he does not want to be...

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (14 Jul 2020)

Paul Murphy: Last week, the Minister, Deputy Cowen, was shielded from having to face questions by a vote in this House. That was a mistake. The consequence of this was a drip feed of information, which is precisely what the Minister said would be damaging. The information which emerged over the weekend is very serious for the two reasons. The first is that the record itself describes a supposed...

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (14 Jul 2020)

Paul Murphy: I really do not think that is accurate. The Taoiseach was aware at the time of the statement by the Minister, Deputy Cowen. I hope that those who have made statements outside the House as to the need for the Minister to answer questions will vote in favour of him doing so now, in order that we can have questions and answers, rather than a continuing drip feed.

Written Answers — Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection: Covid-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment (14 Jul 2020)

Paul Murphy: 693. To ask the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection if she will accept self-assessed income for 2019 from self-employed persons as would be accepted by the Revenue Commissioners for tax purposes as reference-year evidence of income for the purposes of determining the level of continued payment of the pandemic unemployment payment rather than only using 2018 as self-employed...

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Congregated Settings: Meat Plants (10 Jul 2020)

Paul Murphy: I thank the MRCI for its work on this matter. It has outlined a case of criminal neglect of health and workers' rights by the State. I hope what is a major scandal in terms of the treatment of these workers in regard to Covid-19 serves as a wake-up call concerning their treatment going into the future. I will try not to ask the same questions as other members. The MRCI has highlighted...

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Congregated Settings: Meat Plants (10 Jul 2020)

Paul Murphy: The witnesses have been clear but I ask them to elaborate on a matter. Last May, the then Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Deputy Heather Humphreys, said in the Dáil that migrant workers in meat factories "are not tied to any one employer. If they wish to work for somebody else, they may do so". In terms of how the system operates, that is inaccurate.

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Congregated Settings: Meat Plants (10 Jul 2020)

Paul Murphy: All of that adds to the already existing power imbalance between the owners of these factories and the workers. It makes it even more extreme, which obviously adds to cases like this.

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Congregated Settings: Meat Plants (10 Jul 2020)

Paul Murphy: Ms McGinley is saying no or very few unannounced inspections take place either of working conditions or of health and safety. Is that correct?

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Congregated Settings: Meat Plants (10 Jul 2020)

Paul Murphy: Can I get one more question?

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Congregated Settings: Meat Plants (10 Jul 2020)

Paul Murphy: It is a general question. I raised this with the then Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Deputy Creed, on 30 April. I said we needed to have inspections of meat factories. He accused me of smearing the meat factories and the employers. Why were they so defensive? Deputy Bríd Smith made the point about neglect in the third biggest sector in terms of clusters. Why have...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: School Accommodation (7 Jul 2020)

Paul Murphy: Deputy Seán Crowe is surely also entitled to a minute.

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: School Accommodation (7 Jul 2020)

Paul Murphy: I will take 30 seconds. This plan will not be acceptable. The Minister is facing a formidable campaign of opposition that has collected more than 2,000 signatures. The campaign has community support and there was a large online public meeting on the issue last week. I do not think the Department can just wash its hands of this and say that the choice is up to the patron bodies. The...
