Seanad: Parental Leave Bill 2013: Committee Stage (26 Feb 2014)

Mary White: Exactly.

Seanad: Parental Leave Bill 2013: Committee Stage (26 Feb 2014)

Mary White: I will be a little bold and say that if all Labour Party Deputies were as progressive as the Minister of State they would not be in the trouble they are in currently.

Seanad: Parental Leave Bill 2013: Committee Stage (26 Feb 2014)

Mary White: Did he say that too?

Seanad: Parental Leave Bill 2013: Committee Stage (26 Feb 2014)

Mary White: I feel a moral responsibility to put on record the Minister of State’s personal achievement in honouring her word that she would come back in early spring and discuss the Bill further. I would also like to congratulate our Leader, Senator Cummins, who did not take the traditional aggressive or antagonistic approach to an Opposition Bill and who saw it as important that fathers would...

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Feb 2014)

Mary White: There are no partisan politics at meetings of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Discussion with Commissioner for Victims and Survivors (6 Feb 2014)

Mary White: I thank both delegates for coming. It is an awesome challenge that they must face and I have no words on how difficult it will be. The definition of "victim" was a contentious issue in the Haass report and Ms Stone said it was an issue the main political parties could not resolve. Therefore, she faces a question mark, which it is interesting to know. In her presentation she said, "I was...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: North-South Co-operation on Health and EU Directive on Patients' Rights: Department of Health (6 Feb 2014)

Mary White: From listening to what we have heard today, is it not correct to say that two political drivers are needed; one in the North and one in the South to drive through the common sense issues raised by Alasdair McDonnell, MP? He is on the spot and he knows. We need the drivers to be in place. With all due respect, reports and meetings between the Secretary General and his counterpart mean...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: North-South Co-operation on Health and EU Directive on Patients' Rights: Department of Health (6 Feb 2014)

Mary White: Gabh mo leithscéal-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: North-South Co-operation on Health and EU Directive on Patients' Rights: Department of Health (6 Feb 2014)

Mary White: I am only making the point but I got interrupted by the interjection of the Leader of the Seanad. My point is that the Ministers have to do it. I refer to what Alasdair McDonnell, MP, said about the Belfast hospital being able to help the people in the north west. We have to do something about it. We hear about the implementation of the Good Friday Agreement-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: North-South Co-operation on Health and EU Directive on Patients' Rights: Department of Health (6 Feb 2014)

Mary White: It is frustrating.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: North-South Co-operation on Health and EU Directive on Patients' Rights: Department of Health (6 Feb 2014)

Mary White: Yes, but what about all the issues Alasdair McDonnell, MP, raised?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: North-South Co-operation on Health and EU Directive on Patients' Rights: Department of Health (6 Feb 2014)

Mary White: What is the current situation? The current need for people from Sligo or Donegal to travel to Galway is very controversial. What is the current position regarding somebody in Donegal?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: North-South Co-operation on Health and EU Directive on Patients' Rights: Department of Health (6 Feb 2014)

Mary White: Is it correct that when that is up and running in 2016, it will treat 500,000 patients, 10% of whom will be from the Republic?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: North-South Co-operation on Health and EU Directive on Patients' Rights: Department of Health (6 Feb 2014)

Mary White: I thank the witnesses for attending. In this area of health, progress has been made. Health is more positive than many areas. As Mr. McDonnell said, there must be a key driver of all issues and the opportunities for more co-operation. I am interested in current arrangements for cancer care in the north west. Ms Nic Aongusa referred to this but perhaps she can repeat the point.

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Jan 2014)

Mary White: Does the Senator have three jobs?

Seanad: Valuation (Amendment) Bill 2013: Second Stage (16 Jan 2014)

Mary White: -----very sheltered whereas it is very different in the private sector. For example, when I got involved in starting up Lir Chocolates my passion was to create employment, given that the national unemployment rate was 17% at that time. The people in retail work morning, noon and night and if the shop is not open they are still on the job. For example, Tesco employs 15,000 people all over...

Seanad: Valuation (Amendment) Bill 2013: Second Stage (16 Jan 2014)

Mary White: Local authorities cannot rely on retailers to increase the rates. The rates on small shops which are endeavouring to keep going are exorbitant. One of those who was with me this morning has an outstanding rates bill for €60,000. Her bank went out of business and fled the country and now she is trying to negotiate with a new bank. She is a very good business person but consumer...

Seanad: Valuation (Amendment) Bill 2013: Second Stage (16 Jan 2014)

Mary White: I apologise. There does not appear to be any logic to what is going on in this country at the moment. I do not know from where we will get the brains to sort out the country. I am not optimistic at the moment.
