Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Justice and Home Affairs Council: Discussion (25 Jun 2014)

David Stanton: We were told that two of the biggest threats to the State are flooding and cybercrime, so we would be interested in doing work on those matters. There was a major conference in Cork recently on cybercrime. Many international experts attended that event and I think some of them met the Minister's departmental officials on that serious issue.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Justice and Home Affairs Council: Discussion (25 Jun 2014)

David Stanton: There were a lot of complex and important issues discussed at those two meetings. The Minister mentioned the foreign fighters at the beginning. I note that she said there were 30 individuals who had travelled from Ireland to the conflict zones in question, there have been three known fatalities, and the Garda is monitoring the situation and engaging with those who have returned. Do we...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Justice and Home Affairs Council: Discussion (25 Jun 2014)

David Stanton: In that regard I would make one observation. We must be careful, as these are foreign affairs issues that may be more appropriate to the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade. The issue about which this committee is concerned is the safety of citizens from those coming back from there who, if I am reading the matter correctly, may have been radicalised, who may be strongly affected...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Suicide Prevention in Prisons: Irish Institute of Naturopathic Medicine (18 Jun 2014)

David Stanton: Does Ms Mulligan want to see a pilot project in one of the prisons?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Suicide Prevention in Prisons: Irish Institute of Naturopathic Medicine (18 Jun 2014)

David Stanton: Yes, this could be done. My view is that this ties in very much with our report on penal reform. We met other groups working in this area such as the Cornmarket Project in Wexford, Care After Prison, the Irish Association for the Social Integration of Offenders and many more. Ms Mulligan’s project adds another important dimension to this which complements the work of these groups.

David Stanton: We have carried a considerable amount of work on penal reform in the past year and have published a report on it. I am sot sure if Ms Mulligan is aware of it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Suicide Prevention in Prisons: Irish Institute of Naturopathic Medicine (18 Jun 2014)

David Stanton: What complement of staff does Mr. Woods envisage in the authority and what will be their composition?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Charities Regulatory Authority: Chairperson Designate (18 Jun 2014)

David Stanton: Mr. Woods's comment on the need to restore confidence, transparency and assurance is key to the matter. I know from my own dealings with various charities that they are anxious for this to occur because recent events have done considerable damage to the reputation of various charities and the sector as a whole. It is timely that the board and the regulations are now being established. Mr....
