- Seanad: Access to Cancer Treatment Bill 2012: Second Stage (11 Jul 2012)
Mark Daly: I welcome the Minister to the House. I commend Senators MacSharry and Crown for introducing this Bill. Senator MacSharry is well aware of the importance of cancer, having fought the fight in his own family in Sligo for many years. Many families have been affected by cancer and we all know someone who has suffered with the disease. The Bill is given added weight by the inclusion of Senator...

- Seanad: Access to Cancer Treatment Bill 2012: Second Stage (11 Jul 2012)
Mark Daly: I am surprised at my colleagues opposite for intervening when I mentioned Dr. Susan O'Reilly's name, given that they have already put it on the record themselves.
- Seanad: Access to Cancer Treatment Bill 2012: Second Stage (11 Jul 2012)
Mark Daly: I am merely pointing out that the name has been mentioned by others. If someone can mention it in a positive way, it can also be mentioned in a negative way.
- Seanad: Access to Cancer Treatment Bill 2012: Second Stage (11 Jul 2012)
Mark Daly: I have stated the most qualified person in the Chamber has his name on the Bill which Government Senators are about to reject. I thank the Cathaoirleach for his indulgence. I support the Bill, as there is no one more qualified than Senator John Crown, while no one has a better track record on the issue of cancer treatment than Senator Mark MacSharry.
- Seanad: Order of Business (5 Jul 2012)
Mark Daly: I second the amendment to the Order of Business proposed by my colleague, Senator Diarmuid Wilson. Will the Leader organise a debate on the US-Ireland Alliance? One issue I would like discussed is the reason the president of the alliance, Ms Trina Vargo, has not attended the Oireachtas joint foreign affairs committee in spite of being requested to do so. She indicated to the committee...
- Seanad: Order of Business (5 Jul 2012)
Mark Daly: We were told we would receive an answer to our request for the lady to come before the committee by the end of June but that deadline has passed and we have not received any response as to whether she will attend. She has questions to answer. The US State Department has cut funding to the Mitchell Scholars programme which is run by the US-Ireland Alliance. Many, probably all Senators, will...
- Seanad: Rent Supplements: Motion (4 Jul 2012)
Mark Daly: I welcome the Minister to the House. An enormous sum of money has been spent on this scheme over the past five years. In her speech to the House earlier the Minister spoke of her amazement at the proposal to pay landlords directly. Previously, rent was paid directly to landlords under this and other schemes but now it is paid to tenants. This has left some curious anomalies in the system...
- Seanad: Order of Business (14 Jun 2012)
Mark Daly: Members rightly bring up issues of human rights and human rights abuses across the world. This morning Members referred to human rights abuses in Syria and the annihilation of its citizens by their Government. Members also raise human rights abuses in Palestine and in Colombia here and at the foreign affairs committee. Accordingly, will the Leader organise a debate on human rights abuses...
- Seanad: Order of Business (14 Jun 2012)
Mark Daly: The issue of pardons and human rights issues in the North of Ireland are relevant to this debate. While we broaden our sympathies, we need not lessen our loyalties. We had an interesting case where the Minister for Defence yesterday referred to Derry as Londonderry. Recently, he seems to be getting many words wrong.
- Seanad: Order of Business (14 Jun 2012)
Mark Daly: He also described the position of the then Government, the people and the Army on neutrality during the Second World War as morally bankrupt.
- Seanad: Order of Business (14 Jun 2012)
Mark Daly: I just want the record from yesterday to be clarified regarding a statement by another Senator. I want to quote------
- Seanad: Order of Business (14 Jun 2012)
Mark Daly: I just want to quote one of those who deserted. He said it was due to poor conditions, boredom and the better pay in the British Army.
- Seanad: Order of Business (14 Jun 2012)
Mark Daly: I have no problems with pardons. I wanted to clarify that for Senator Gilroy.
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Jun 2012)
Mark Daly: Senator Feargal Quinn is a great advocate of organ donation. I ask the Leader to organise a debate on the impending transposition into Irish law of organ donation legislation, without debate, by the health committee. The matter is not to be discussed in the Dáil or Seanad. Organ donation transforms lives. It is absolutely astonishing that legislation amounting to 38 pages will not be...
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Jun 2012)
Mark Daly: My colleagues, who are all historians, are all well aware that Mr. Churchill did make that statement. We now have the benefit of hindsight and I support entirely the pardon given by the Minister.
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Jun 2012)
Mark Daly: Would the Senator have supported Germany?
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Jun 2012)
Mark Daly: On a point of order, I have no difficulty with the pardon being given. My only issue with it is that the Minister was-----
