Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Contact Tracing: HSE (28 Oct 2020)

Colm Burke: I thank all the witnesses for the work they are doing, as well as all the staff involved with tracking and tracing. I will ask a couple of questions on different topics. Will Dr. Kelleher deal again with how people are contacted and the response tracers get? In the past week, all of us, as public representatives, have received fairly nasty emails on various matters. For example, I got one...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Contact Tracing: HSE (28 Oct 2020)

Colm Burke: I can actually send on the texts received by a person who came in from abroad. I got copies of them. There is nothing in the text as to which Department or agency is sending them which is a big mistake.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Contact Tracing: HSE (28 Oct 2020)

Colm Burke: I raised concerns earlier this week about people travelling to Northern Ireland for medical procedures. They are travelling for anything up to six hours by bus, and many of them are elderly. It is relation to cataract operations. Maybe Mr. McCallion might deal with this issue. My understanding is that there is a delay, certainly, in the south-south-west area, in getting appointments to be...

Colm Burke: This particular case is a dwelling house that was used by the Garda but which was not occupied for 20 years. How many more buildings like this would there be across Departments? For example, the Department of Education may own a building that is not a school but as a result people may assume it is the responsibility of another Department. Have we identified all the properties in the...

Colm Burke: I will move to information technology systems. I know there has been much investment in the area. I agree that the use of IT systems during the pandemic has been very effective. The Covid payment was paid out in a very short timeframe, and it went from nowhere to having a huge number of people getting those benefits. It came about as a result of very hard work within the Department and...

Colm Burke: I want to move on to the area of pensions. The figure that stands out to me is that the number of people receiving pensions in 2019 was 26,000 whereas in 2018, it was 25,000. The issue that is arising is that I presume that in the coming years we will have more people retiring because of the processes ongoing in Departments for quite a long period of time but also because people are living...

My questions relate to public private partnerships, PPPs, in respect of which I want to raise, first, a comparison of costs issue. Page 21 of the appropriation account includes a reference to two projects. In the case of the first, the...

2019 Annual Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 26 - Department of Education and Skills
(21 Oct 2020)

Colm Burke: In fairness, these particular projects were undertaken by Mr. Ó Foghlú's Department. We are talking about the 2018 and 2019 accounts. The two contracts in question were agreed under the remit of the Department of Education and Skills and there is a huge variation in the costs involved. I am asking what engagement there has been with the contractors in that regard.
