- Planning and Development (Housing) and Residential Tenancies Bill 2016 [Seanad]: Report Stage (Resumed) (16 Dec 2016)
Bríd Smith: I want final clarity on this. Tenants who live in apartments in Cherry Orchard were given notice that their rent will increase by 10% in January. This does not mean they have had negotiations, but they have been given notice the rent will increase. It is not exactly a des res area but the rent is increasing by 10%. Will the Minister clarify for me whether the law will cover this and stop...

- Planning and Development (Housing) and Residential Tenancies Bill 2016 [Seanad]: Report Stage (Resumed) (16 Dec 2016)
Bríd Smith: I asked the Minister if it would apply if a landlord gave notice rather than entered negotiations with the tenant. If he gave notice of intent, does that mean he is covered by this legislation or not in the absence of any negotiations?

- Planning and Development (Housing) and Residential Tenancies Bill 2016 [Seanad]: Report Stage (Resumed) (16 Dec 2016)
Bríd Smith: This relates to my question. What happens to tenants who have already been given notice by their landlords their rent will increase by 10% in January? What happens to this agreement? - Other Questions: Commissions of Inquiry (16 Dec 2016)
Bríd Smith: The Minister may believe it is appropriate, but it is in fact wholly inappropriate not to open a public inquiry, not just because there is an investigation into the behaviour of gardaí but because there is no investigation into the behaviour of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions which allowed a case as serious as this to slip into the District Court as a minor offence....

- Other Questions: Commissions of Inquiry (16 Dec 2016)
Bríd Smith: I am aware that this question has been brought before the Minister and previous Ministers with responsibility for justice many times in the Dáil. It relates to the case of the murder of Shane O'Farrell. I am raising it again. Those of us in the House will continue to raise it until we see a form of justice that is appropriate to the events that took place. We should have a discussion...
- Other Questions: Commissions of Inquiry (16 Dec 2016)
Bríd Smith: I feel rather inadequate standing in the Chamber before the Minister given that Shane's mother and sister are in the Gallery. They understand every detail of this case. In a more transparent and thorough-going democracy, for example, ancient Greece, they could have stood in front of the parliament and the nation to relay exactly the detail of the case and what happened. I wish to point...
