- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Preservation of the Biodiversity and Ecosystems of Peatlands: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Éamon Ó Cuív: On a point of clarification, there was a case in Connemara where Galway County Council gave an exemption to put up a roadside fence, if Mr. Lucas knows where Ballinahinch is, at Ballinahinch Castle. I will explain where problems arise in the hills. Somebody then complained about the exemption through An Bord Pleanála in Dublin and An Bord Pleanála then gave a ruling that might...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Preservation of the Biodiversity and Ecosystems of Peatlands: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Éamon Ó Cuív: It goes back over 20 years. There was considerable consensus among all farmers and local people who recognised the damage being caused by the sausage machine. Things happened that probably should not have. The vast majority of people, certainly in Connemara, wanted the sausage machine out because in one season it was destroying a bog completely. I do not think anybody really-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Preservation of the Biodiversity and Ecosystems of Peatlands: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Éamon Ó Cuív: We can all agree that the sausage machine should never have been used. It should have been gone 20 years ago and we thought we had got rid of it. When it changed from the Department of Arts, Heritage the Gaeltacht and the Islands to the Department of the Environment and Local Government, it seemed to make a recovery, but it should never have happened. It was gone in 1999 or 2000 and it...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Preservation of the Biodiversity and Ecosystems of Peatlands: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I think a figure of 3,600 ha of raised bog was mentioned.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Preservation of the Biodiversity and Ecosystems of Peatlands: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Éamon Ó Cuív: It is 141,000 ha, as opposed to 3,600 ha.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Preservation of the Biodiversity and Ecosystems of Peatlands: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Preservation of the Biodiversity and Ecosystems of Peatlands: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Éamon Ó Cuív: -----in the SAC, NHA and SPA network. The Department is hoping to get to a figure of 3,600 ha of raised bog.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Preservation of the Biodiversity and Ecosystems of Peatlands: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Éamon Ó Cuív: It is a vast amount.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Preservation of the Biodiversity and Ecosystems of Peatlands: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Éamon Ó Cuív: From memory, the figure we used to use was 8,000 ha, which is close to the figure mentioned by Dr. O'Connell.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Preservation of the Biodiversity and Ecosystems of Peatlands: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I wish to have an issue clarified. My understanding is someone will not receive permission on two grounds: the yield class is not given and they are included in SPAs, NHAs, etc. Effectively, a person will not receive permission to plant conifers in an NHA or SPA.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Preservation of the Biodiversity and Ecosystems of Peatlands: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Éamon Ó Cuív: A person will not receive a grant, but it might not be possible to stop someone from planting.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Preservation of the Biodiversity and Ecosystems of Peatlands: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Éamon Ó Cuív: It is virtually a non-starter.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Preservation of the Biodiversity and Ecosystems of Peatlands: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Would I be right in saying it would be very hard to receive planning permission in the 141,000 ha of SPAs, NHAs and SACs because in most cases it is necessary to build roads etc. to a wind farm which would also not be allowed?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Preservation of the Biodiversity and Ecosystems of Peatlands: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Éamon Ó Cuív: That is what I understood.

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Preservation of the Biodiversity and Ecosystems of Peatlands: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I was bitterly disappointed when the CAP for the period 2014 to 2020 was being brought forward. As the Vice Chairman knows, I waged a campaign throughout the country on the equalisation of payments as proposed by the European Commission. However, vested interests in the country fought against them, while the ecology organisations went to ground.
- JobPath Programme: Motion [Private Members] (5 Feb 2019)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I compliment Sinn Féin on the motion. I generally find the staff of the Department helpful, courteous and understanding. There seem to be instructions, however, coming from on high all the time to take a draconian, Victorian view towards people who are unemployed. There seems to be a view out there, coming from the very top of the Minister's Department, that there are plenty of...

- Written Answers — Department of Health: Hospital Services (5 Feb 2019)
Éamon Ó Cuív: 400. To ask the Minister for Health the reason orthopaedic services have not recommenced on the Merlin Park campus of Galway University Hospital as promised; when they will recommence; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5420/19]
