Ulick Burke: I welcome, as most would, the decision of the trade unions to accept the Government's invitation and call off the proposed day of action next week. This is a first positive step and part of the solution. I heard Deputy White talking about the high wire act, but she totally missed the point. The Government has on three occasions attempted this high wire act and failed â it has fallen off....

Ulick Burke: They fully realise the Government has proven its incompetence and I do not see it being capable of resolving the issue. I will give one example from the budget introduced last October. Deputy Flynn will know of this as she was also present at an IFA meeting in the west when there was doublespeak and she escaped the wrath of the IFA while her colleagues took the rap for her.

Ulick Burke: Be that as it may, the IFA has clearly indicated in its submission for the upcoming budget that average income for a farming family is just over â¬19,000 per annum, a decrease of 12.5% on the figure for last year, and that there is likely to be a further decrease of 12.5% in 2009. All that the IFA and the farming community wants is to be assured that they will not have to endure any further...
