Seanad: Order of Business (20 Nov 2012)

Mary Moran: Yes, I do. Women are well able to earn an independent living and are well able to rise in high positions in society on their own merit.

Mary Moran: I take exception to being interrupted.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Nov 2012)

Mary Moran: I welcome the announcement by the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, that next year's G8 summit will be held at Lough Erne in County Fermanagh. That is a great achievement. It will be great for the country as a whole, as he pointed out this morning. I am delighted to have heard him say that he will promote the South of Ireland as well as the North. I welcome that news.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Nov 2012)

Mary Moran: On a point of order, how dare the Senator tell me not to talk?

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Nov 2012)

Mary Moran: I wish to raise an issue that was highlighted on "Prime Time" earlier this week on the incidence of tuberculosis and the lack of screening to detect it. In the 1950s TB was responsible for hundreds of deaths. Even in the past decade there have been 400 to 500 cases. In recent months two cases were highlighted, one in Galway and the other in the midlands. Although thankfully TB has...

Seanad: Measures to Address Bullying: Motion (14 Nov 2012)

Mary Moran: Absolutely.

Seanad: Measures to Address Bullying: Motion (14 Nov 2012)

Mary Moran: It does. Some people think bullying affects a particular class or type of child. The cleverest, the richest or the poorest girl in the school can be bullied. Bullying does not discriminate. It can affect the rich, the poor, the clever or not so clever, the talented or the not so talented. This is why we need a whole-school approach and everyone looking at the problem. I have gone away...

Seanad: Measures to Address Bullying: Motion (14 Nov 2012)

Mary Moran: I think so too. All forms of bullying can only be tackled effectively if the whole school community is involved. It is important we have students, parents, teachers, principals and boards of management working together. Adequate in-service training must be provided and offered. The easy bit is sending a group of teachers on a course and establishing an anti-bullying policy. The difficult...

Seanad: Measures to Address Bullying: Motion (14 Nov 2012)

Mary Moran: I have so much more that I want to say.

Seanad: Measures to Address Bullying: Motion (14 Nov 2012)

Mary Moran: I hope we will return to this topic. Terrific work is being done in schools and there are terrific teachers who deal with this problem above and beyond their duty. They are often not the SPHE or CSPE teachers. Teachers should not be obliged to teach CSPE or SPHE just because there is a gap in the timetable. Schools sometimes see it as a weakness if bullying is identified in their pupils....

Seanad: Measures to Address Bullying: Motion (14 Nov 2012)

Mary Moran: I welcome the Minister to the House and express my sincere sympathy and that of my colleagues to the families of those who have tragically died by suicide in recent times. I also pay tribute to Mr. Jonathan Pugsley, who was at the briefing this afternoon. It is a tribute and testament to the man and it is invaluable help to listen to the story. It gives us a further insight and helps to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Student Grant Application System: Discussion with SUSI (13 Nov 2012)

Mary Moran: I had a query earlier from a parent of an applicant. They were informed last week that the payment was coming through but yesterday they were informed that there was a mistake in the system and everything had been wiped from the computer. I can give Ms Stewart the names and details after the meeting and I would be grateful if she would look into it. The man I spoke to was distraught.

Seanad: Matter raised under Standing Order 30 (8 Nov 2012)

Mary Moran: Well done.

Seanad: Matter raised under Standing Order 30 (8 Nov 2012)

Mary Moran: I welcome the Minister to the House and commend her for the terrific amount of work that she had done on the referendum. My fellow colleagues on all sides of the House share that view. I also commend Senator Norris for tabling the motion. We cannot reiterate enough that the substance of the referendum's proposal is not affected by today's ruling. We need to send that message and repeat it...

Seanad: Social Welfare Appeals System: Motion (7 Nov 2012)

Mary Moran: I will be brief because I am aware of the time. I commend the Independent Senators for bringing this motion before the House and highlighting the real concerns and problems within the appeals system and the social welfare system. Despite being on the Government side - unfortunately I will have to vote with the Government - I commend them for raising these issues and agree with a great deal...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Special Needs Education: Discussion with Special Needs Parents Association (7 Nov 2012)

Mary Moran: I am not a member of the committee, but when I realised what was being discussed at this meeting, I decided to come and make a contribution. I congratulate and commend our guests on their ongoing work, with which I am familiar. As a parent of a child with special needs, they outlined the concerns of parents in a nutshell. The fact that I have a child with special needs is one of the main...
