Seanad: Technological Universities Bill 2015: Committee Stage (7 Feb 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: That is a little conspiratorial. The likes and dislikes of a president of a university as an educator regarding his own academic council would not prevent student representation by the president of the students' union. One might say about anybody that one did not like him or him but that one tolerated him or her, just as I might tolerate the Senator in the Seanad. What he suggests is not...

Seanad: Technological Universities Bill 2015: Committee Stage (7 Feb 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I do but I could suggest I did not.

Seanad: Technological Universities Bill 2015: Committee Stage (7 Feb 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: It is a conspiratorial argument. I agree that there should be some student representative on an academic council. How we bring it about in the Bill is another day's work. In my experience, whether the president of the students' union was liked, he or she was the student representative voted in by the students and he or she sat on the academic council.

Seanad: Technological Universities Bill 2015: Committee Stage (7 Feb 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: Does Senator Gerard P. Craughwell accept that a governing body, with its many representatives — external, internal, administrative, academic and student, as provided for in the legislation — has a right to decide how many representatives of the student body it should have on the academic council? It is the experience to do so. Someone's dictating that students not be...

Seanad: Technological Universities Bill 2015: Committee Stage (7 Feb 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I will tell the Senator-----

Seanad: Technological Universities Bill 2015: Committee Stage (7 Feb 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I am a firm believer in the idea of doubt. It shows a tremendous intelligence. Absolute surety is probably a male prerogative whereas doubt leaves matters open. Having spent 34 years on the campuses of Ireland, I know that governing bodies do not dictate. There are many representatives on governing bodies, including student union representatives, postgraduates, etc., and I believe there...

Seanad: Statement by the Taoiseach (1 Feb 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I welcome the Taoiseach. First, I congratulate him on his office. As a citizen of this country and as an Independent Senator, I feel that Deputy Varadkar fits it very well. I am proud that he is there. I say this because of what I have seen and what I have heard, especially in relation to the area of Brexit, which is a powerful force approaching our country. The Taoiseach has grasped...

Seanad: Statement by the Taoiseach (1 Feb 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: Maybe. There is the subtlety of a chainsaw here.I will leave Senators with this thought, which nobody has mentioned, that the most important aspect of the next ten years is how people will grow old in Ireland, how they will age and age well, how they will be safe, be of value, be connected and be regarded when they are old. That is a major issue. It is an issue that an independent Seanad,...

Marie Louise O'Donnell: Hope springs eternal.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Irish Film Industry: Discussion (31 Jan 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I think it is disgraceful.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Irish Film Industry: Discussion (31 Jan 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: The witnesses may forgive me as I am new to the film industry, as opposed to theatre or media. First, is Ms McGrane making a distinction between her in an office at the bureaucratic or creative end of it, and the brilliant trainee rigger, construction worker, electrician on the ground because it does not seem as though they have the same facility to run through the system and get to the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Irish Film Industry: Discussion (31 Jan 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: Let me put it this way. Ms McGrane stated that she ran through it. It was very easy for her. She got promoted. She had no problem getting promoted. She had no problem finding ways. She has no problem staying there. She had no problem having a semi-permanency. However, we are hearing that, with another end of the industry, trainees are having a problem in getting permanency and in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Irish Film Industry: Discussion (31 Jan 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: It is a sociological answer that everybody is in certain spaces. I do not know what that means.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Irish Film Industry: Discussion (31 Jan 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: Mr. Hickey stated that Screen Training Ireland has plans for the development of training across the audiovisual production sector and is engaging with the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht on the development of its training services. How is he engaging with them and what does he hope to get for them because I do not remember them becoming Quality and Qualifications Ireland,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Irish Film Industry: Discussion (31 Jan 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I know that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Irish Film Industry: Discussion (31 Jan 2018)

Marie Louise O'Donnell: I understand that. How does Mr. Hickey see his role with the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht moving that on? In what way would Mr. Hickey like to see that moved on besides a cheque?
