Dinny McGinley: The Minister of State has set out the ambitious target of ending long-term homelessness by the end of 2016 by explicitly adopting a housing-led approach. Considerable funding has been extended to tackle homelessness annually across the Government. The Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government has overseen local government and State expenditure exceeding €50...

Dinny McGinley: That will be brought to the Minister of State’s attention.

Topical Issue Debate: Homeless Persons Supports (7 May 2013)

Dinny McGinley: Unfortunately, the Minister of State with responsibility for housing and planning, Deputy Jan O'Sullivan, is not available to take this debate today, but she has asked me to thank the Deputy for providing this opportunity to discuss the issue of homelessness and the Government's response to it. The Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government's role in respect of...

Topical Issue Debate: Third Level Funding (7 May 2013)

Dinny McGinley: I thank the Deputy for raising this matter. A new report published today, School Completers - What Next?, shows that over 50% of students who were enrolled in the final year of senior cycle in Department of Education and Skills-supported post-primary schools in 2010 went directly to higher education. This is the first in a series of reports by the Department that tracks pupils one year...

Topical Issue Debate: Third Level Funding (7 May 2013)

Dinny McGinley: I take the points made by the Deputy. A number of initiatives to make third level education accessible to those who are under-represented have been initiated. One of these is the third level access fund, as administered by further and higher education institutions, to support the retention of certain target groups, namely, students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, mature students,...

Topical Issue Debate: Commemorative Coins (2 May 2013)

Dinny McGinley: I thank Deputy McNamara for submitting this topic for discussion as it is a matter in which I have an interest. The Central Bank will shortly submit its recommendations for the 2014 collector coin...

Topical Issue Debate: Commemorative Coins (2 May 2013)

Dinny McGinley: I acknowledge the Deputy's interest in promoting Killaloe where Brian Boru was born. As a part of his constituency, it is only natural that he would seek to do so. Killaloe is Brian Boru's place of birth and Clontarf is the location where he met his heroic death on Good Friday 1014 while praying for Ireland in his tent. Another place near my constituency where Brian Boru could also be...

Dinny McGinley: As the Deputy from Tipperary knows well, the ashes of Brian Boru rest in the ancient city of Armagh. I hope that when we commemorate and celebrate Brian Boru's life, we will include in the reckoning Killaloe, Clontarf, Armagh and other places along the way. To address the core of the Deputy's question, a coin will be issued to commemorate Brian Boru's death 1,000 years ago.

Dinny McGinley: I thank Deputy O'Mahony for raising this matter. The feedback on the ease with which the local property tax, LPT, can be paid has generally been positive. I am advised by the Revenue Commissioners that over 400,000 people have successfully filed their LPT returns to date and have either paid immediately or selected one of the other available payment options. I understand this afternoon's...
