Seanad: Order of Business (28 May 2015)

David Norris: In terms of the word "crook", Mr. Blatter is a crook. It is as simple as that. I wish to make a suggestion to the red-top newspapers or whatever they are called. I mean the tabloid newspapers, which I despise, but they are quite funny with their headlines. I suggest the headline "Splatter Blatter".

Seanad: Aer Lingus Share Disposal: Statements (28 May 2015)

David Norris: I am sure the Acting Chairman will be flexible.

Seanad: Aer Lingus Share Disposal: Statements (28 May 2015)

David Norris: Yes.

Seanad: Aer Lingus Share Disposal: Statements (28 May 2015)

David Norris: I am grateful to Senator Quinn for allowing me participate in this debate. We have consolidated so that if Senator Sean Barrett, who is our acknowledged expert in this area, comes in, he will be able to speak. I think he is at the banking inquiry, but I telephoned his office to alert it. We should have an independent, stand-alone and State-owned airline. When the Fianna Fáil...

Seanad: Aer Lingus Share Disposal: Statements (28 May 2015)

David Norris: It is an absolute disgrace.

Seanad: Aer Lingus Share Disposal: Statements (28 May 2015)

David Norris: This Government eventually resolved the Waterford Glass situation and it has an absolute moral obligation in this area as well. Whatever is needed from that money must go to the deferred pensioners.

Seanad: Aer Lingus Share Disposal: Statements (28 May 2015)

David Norris: It is inhuman to expect pensioners who have worked for 40 years to experience a cut of 60%. I would very much like to hear the Labour Party on this point. With regard to the pensions, will the Government carry out an investigation into the administration of the IASS fund? It is disgraceful. I was provided with a comparison sheet, between IASS, AVIVA, Davy Assets, Friends First, Kleinwort...

Seanad: Aer Lingus Share Disposal: Statements (28 May 2015)

David Norris: The people who paid unwillingly, through the sacrificing of their pensions, for a situation where Aer Lingus could be set up to be sold are getting nothing out of it. Let us hear from the Government on what it will do about this. There is an imperative and a moral case for the Government to give at least a substantial part of these funds, not into education, hospitals and all the usual...

Seanad: Statute Law Revision Bill 2015: Second Stage (28 May 2015)

David Norris: It is a surprise rather than a pleasure.

Seanad: Statute Law Revision Bill 2015: Second Stage (28 May 2015)

David Norris: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Statute Law Revision Bill 2015: Second Stage (28 May 2015)

David Norris: This is the third time I have had the pleasure of speaking on this kind of Bill. I remember the time when Martin Mansergh was Minister of State. I thank those Ministers who precede the present Minister. The Irish Manuscripts Commission did very valuable work in preparing the volumes concerning these defunct statutes. I think we owe a great debt to them and also to the National Library and...

Seanad: Statute Law Revision Bill 2015: Second Stage (28 May 2015)

David Norris: I will table an amendment to retain these two provisions, as they definitely should be kept. Another law that should be retained is the proclamation of 1779 prohibiting the publishing of false, wicked or malicious reports or news. That is one in the eye for the tabloid newspapers.

Seanad: Statute Law Revision Bill 2015: Second Stage (28 May 2015)

David Norris: Exactly. When will the Leader move it? There is the Leader's privacy Bill and my privacy Bill. I think the three matters I have isolated are of particular concern still. Two on the same page have a certain poignancy, particularly for Members in this room. I am talking about the proclamation of 11 May 1798 promising a reward for the discovery of Lord Edward FitzGerald, wanted for high...

Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2015)

David Norris: I would like a debate on this issue of corporal punishment as I am not convinced about it. I would like to be convinced. It does seem to me that this is political correctness gone wrong. It is interfering in the home. There are many impolite, brassy children around. I think a bit of a slap would not do them the slightest bit of harm. I agree with Pope on that. I know it is an unpopular...

Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2015)

David Norris: I could not hear what Senator van Turnhout asked but I will discuss the matter with her later. It is for that reason that I would like a debate on the matter to clarify things in my own mind. There are many people throughout the country who feel as I do, namely, that giving a child the odd slap if it is badly behaved is very good for it.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2015)

David Norris: That is what I think. I am prepared to listen to the debate and perhaps change my mind on the matter. Of course, I am not a parent nor, despite recent developments, do I ever intend to become one. With regard to Aer Lingus, can I reiterate in a slightly different form what Senator Darragh O’Brien said yesterday? If Aer Lingus is sold and we get €340 million or whatever for it,...

Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2015)

David Norris: There is no other word for it. They were defrauded of their pensions while the company was profitable.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 May 2015)

David Norris: I would very much like to see those people looked after. They have been left in an appalling state and that is utterly wrong.

Seanad: Order of Business (26 May 2015)

David Norris: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business (26 May 2015)

David Norris: Hear, hear.
