- Seanad: Irish Nationality and Citizenship Bill 2004: Committee Stage. (3 Dec 2004)
Maurice Cummins: My interpretation would be different from that of the Minister.
- Seanad: Irish Nationality and Citizenship Bill 2004: Committee Stage. (3 Dec 2004)
Maurice Cummins: The Minister was never known for that.
- Seanad: Irish Nationality and Citizenship Bill 2004: Committee Stage. (3 Dec 2004)
Maurice Cummins: The Minister stated that the transparency I am seeking might mean that confidential and private matters relating to the applicant would be put into the public domain but I am not suggesting that. We all realise that it will be difficult to achieve balance in the situation and we recognise the difficulties faced by the Minister and his officials. I take the Minister at face value but we can...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (3 Dec 2004)
Maurice Cummins: Regarding the release of the murderers of Detective Garda McCabe, Sinn Féin is obviously driving the agenda. There is no question of it being anyone else. I agree with Senator O'Toole than an explanation should be given by Sinn Féin especially as the killers denied at the time that they were members of the IRA or Sinn Féin, or acting on their behalf. What is the status of the other two...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (2 Dec 2004)
Maurice Cummins: I want to raise the issue of the Taoiseach's statement yesterday on the proposed release of the killers of Detective Garda Jerry McCabe. I agree with Senator Brennan that the matter should have been handled in a different manner and his wife and family should have been consulted before any such statement was made. People quoted the previous Minister, Deputy O'Donoghue, and the Taoiseach. On...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (2 Dec 2004)
Maurice Cummins: I will bow to that rule. On the comments of Senator Hayes, my party was always to the forefront in offering sympathy to the families of the policemen murdered in Northern Ireland, who came under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement. The Taoiseach is on record saying that these murderers are not part of the Good Friday Agreement, which is why the distinction should be clarified.
- Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy. (2 Dec 2004)
Maurice Cummins: On behalf of my party, I express my sympathy to Ted Russell's wife, Derry, and his son and daughters. In my capacity as chairman of the Port of Waterford, I had the pleasure of knowing Ted Russell when he was chairman of Limerick Harbour Commissioners. He held that post for 26 years and was a member of that body for more than 40 years. As the Leader stated, he played a very active role in the...
- Seanad: Irish Nationality and Citizenship Bill 2004: Second Stage. (1 Dec 2004)
Maurice Cummins: That is what we want.
- Seanad: Irish Nationality and Citizenship Bill 2004: Second Stage. (1 Dec 2004)
Maurice Cummins: I welcome the Minister. I read his Second Stage contribution in the other House and I am glad he has not adopted the same confrontational style he did there. It did little for the caring and sharing image the Government wishes to portray.
- Seanad: Irish Nationality and Citizenship Bill 2004: Second Stage. (1 Dec 2004)
Maurice Cummins: I am glad that style has not been used in this House. I am sure the Minister will hear a lot more reasoned, calm and constructive contributions on the Bill, to which I look forward. I have no intention of speaking about what should have happened as regards consultation and debate prior to the referendum. The referendum has taken place and the people have spoken and made their intentions known...

Maurice Cummins: We heard it from the Minister of State, Deputy Parlon, today.

Maurice Cummins: In what year was that promised?

Maurice Cummins: The Government was supposed to deliver 10,000 decentralised jobs in three years.
- Seanad: Decentralisation Programme: Statements. (30 Nov 2004)
Maurice Cummins: Fewer people will be decentralised.
- Seanad: Proceeds of Crime (Amendment) Bill 1999: Committee Stage. (30 Nov 2004)
Maurice Cummins: These are substantial amendments and form a major part of the Bill before the House. I agree with the Minister of State that they are necessary. However, I wonder why they were not included in the Bill ab initio. I would certainly agree with the corrupt enrichment order which provides that anyone who has benefited from crime should be penalised. I am somewhat concerned about the kite which...
- Seanad: Proceeds of Crime (Amendment) Bill 1999: Committee Stage. (30 Nov 2004)
Maurice Cummins: I agree with Senator Tuffy that these moneys should be ploughed back into the areas most affected by crime. I support the amendment.
- Seanad: Proceeds of Crime (Amendment) Bill 1999: Committee Stage. (30 Nov 2004)
Maurice Cummins: The Criminal Assets Bureau has seized in excess of â¬60 million. I realise the Department is ploughing moneys into crime prevention and so on but any moneys seized by the Criminal Assets Bureau should be additional to those funds and should be put back into the communities which have been ravaged by the scourge of drugs, in particular. Those moneys should go to the Department of Justice,...
