Seanad: Order of Business (7 Mar 2007)

Terry Leyden: I ask the Deputy Leader to arrange a debate on insurance. The Oireachtas Committee on Enterprise and Small Business has worked very hard to assist in bringing down the costs of insurance. Over 400,000 people have two penalty points at the moment and the insurance companies are increasing the costs of insurance. Hibernian Life & Pensions has increased its costs by approximately 10% for...

Seanad: Order of Business (7 Mar 2007)

Terry Leyden: There should be a debate on the cost of insurance; the effect of penalty points on motorists, given that one in five motorists now have penalty points; and the difficulty that will arise for people in paying increased insurance costs for their cars, in addition to costs to date. Seanad: Control of Exports Bill 2007: Committee Stage. (1 Mar 2007)

Terry Leyden: I completely oppose this amendment. The Senator is getting into too much red tape on this issue, and in so far as the disclosure of competitive edges is concerned. This type of disclosure may be used by other countries to know exactly what we are exporting and when. As a former Minister of State with responsibility for trade, I would not be in favour of such disclosure. It is impractical....

Terry Leyden: As far as Britain is concerned, it produces land mines and cluster bombs——

Seanad: Control of Exports Bill 2007: Committee Stage. (1 Mar 2007)

Terry Leyden: ——and it exported torture chambers some years ago. I do not know of any other country that would introduce this type of legislation. To tie ourselves down further by the insertion of this amendment would be detrimental to the best interests of our exporters. Accordingly, I urge the Minister of State to reject it.
