Public Accounts Committee: 2019 Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 29 - Communications, Climate Action and Environment
(27 Apr 2021)

Colm Burke: I apologise for joining the meeting so late. Some of what I will ask may have been covered. I thank the witnesses for the documentation we received on the presentation. The commercial income for RTÉ has, over the past number of years, experienced a downturn in certain areas and a lot more competition. How does Ms Forbes see commercial income progressing over the next four to five...

Public Accounts Committee: 2019 Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 29 - Communications, Climate Action and Environment
(27 Apr 2021)

Colm Burke: In doing long-term planning and planning for the next five years, does Ms Forbes see RTÉ getting in a greater amount of income from that area or will it just stay static, which would result in the restriction of further development for RTÉ?

Public Accounts Committee: 2019 Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General and Appropriation Accounts
Vote 29 - Communications, Climate Action and Environment
(27 Apr 2021)

Colm Burke: In her opening statement, Ms Forbes said that a decision to be made soon by the Government on the future of media in Ireland will have far-reaching consequences. What in particular is Ms Forbes concerned about in that area that she feels could further restrict the development of RTÉ or the growth of RTÉ as an organisation, and restrict how it can bring in additional income?

Select Committee on Health: Estimates for Public Services 2021
Vote 38 - Health (Revised)
(27 Apr 2021)

Colm Burke: I thank the Minister for the presentation. May I touch on one or two issues? First, additional funding was provided to the private nursing homes to deal with the pandemic. I did not see any figure for public nursing homes and community hospitals. I believe there are 119 of them. Could we have a breakdown of the additional funding that had to be made available, particularly to increase...

Select Committee on Health: Estimates for Public Services 2021
Vote 38 - Health (Revised)
(27 Apr 2021)

Colm Burke: Regarding the elective hospital, how long is this issue going to be kicked around the place? Consider the case of South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital, Cork, for example. The building has been in place for 150 to 200 years. It cannot be modernised unless major work is done. We either go down that road or build a new hospital on a greenfield site. The elective hospital proposed by...

Select Committee on Health: Estimates for Public Services 2021
Vote 38 - Health (Revised)
(27 Apr 2021)

Colm Burke: May I just touch on the National Treatment Purchase Fund? In talking about that, I am also talking about the treatment abroad fund, which is different. People are now being encouraged to travel abroad for some medical treatment although there are facilities in the South to deal with some of the treatments being provided abroad. What are we doing to deal with this issue, so we can keep the...

Select Committee on Health: Estimates for Public Services 2021
Vote 38 - Health (Revised)
(27 Apr 2021)

Colm Burke: One of the problems relating to the NTPF is that people are being sent out for assessment and the assessment comes back and then they have to be referred again. Has reform been made in that regard, that is, the situation whereby people who are referred, are referred not only for the assessment, but also for whatever procedure is required? One of the complaints I am getting in respect of the...

Select Committee on Health: Estimates for Public Services 2021
Vote 38 - Health (Revised)
(27 Apr 2021)

Colm Burke: The Minister referred to the recruitment of additional consultants. Have particular areas been prioritised in that regard? There are several areas in which there is a shortage of consultants. Have those areas been prioritised? What particular areas have the Department and the HSE decided to focus on? I refer to amending legislation relating to people who were not regarded as being on...

Select Committee on Health: Estimates for Public Services 2021
Vote 38 - Health (Revised)
(27 Apr 2021)

Colm Burke: It relates to certain people who were not regarded as being on the specialist list, in the context of consultants. Amending legislation was put in place to allow them to join the specialist register but the regulation to allow that to happen has not been put in place. These are consultants who were appointed but are not regarded as being on the specialist register.

Select Committee on Health: Estimates for Public Services 2021
Vote 38 - Health (Revised)
(27 Apr 2021)

Colm Burke: Yes.

Select Committee on Health: Estimates for Public Services 2021
Vote 38 - Health (Revised)
(27 Apr 2021)

Colm Burke: No, I am referring to consultants who were employed by the HSE and with regard to whom we had to bring in amending legislation because, for various reasons, they did not qualify under the specialist registrar scheme. Some of them were filling positions for several years but had never been on the specialist register when they were then appointed as consultants.

Covid-19 Vaccination Programme: Statements (22 Apr 2021)

Colm Burke: My understanding of recent reports is that a glut of vaccines will be available in the United States, with 800 million doses in total from start to finish being available. Has there been engagement with the US authorities on accessing this supply from the US? I understand Moderna, Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines will be available. Will there be engagement on this issue? ...
