Denis O'Donovan: Recommendation No. 5 in the name of Senator David Cullinane and others is ruled out of order as it involves a potential charge on the Exchequer. Similarly, recommendation No. 6 in the name of Senator David Cullinane and others is ruled out of order.

Seanad: Social Welfare and Pensions (No. 2) Bill 2014: Committee Stage (16 Dec 2014)

Denis O'Donovan: We are on Committee Stage and a new recommendation has been proposed by Senator O'Brien and the other Fianna Fáil Members. It is unhelpful to the general debate of the Social Welfare Bill to have a history lesson on which party and which Government did best. I ask Senators to stick to discussing the recommendation insofar as they can.

Seanad: Social Welfare and Pensions (No. 2) Bill 2014: Committee Stage (16 Dec 2014)

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Dec 2014)

Denis O'Donovan: I rise to again ask the Leader for a debate on the persecution of Christians throughout the world, which is a serious issue. There are many replicas of the incidence which occurred in Sydney. I believe in freedom of religion and the right of a person to be a Muslim, Jew, Baptist and so on. I have previously called for a debate on this issue in the House. A debate on this issue has never...

Seanad: Health Insurance (Amendment) Bill 2014: Second Stage (15 Dec 2014)

Denis O'Donovan: I welcome the Minister to the House. As the acting spokesman on health I can say that our group here will not be opposing this Bill, which we fully support. Some years ago the Taoiseach, Deputy Enda Kenny, the former Minister for Health, Deputy James Reilly, and others strongly opposed this measure so I am glad the new Minister and the Government have come around to the notion of risk...

Seanad: Sustainable Agriculture and Dairy Price Outlook: Statements (10 Dec 2014)

Denis O'Donovan: I welcome this debate, as I welcome all debates on agriculture or fisheries. I heard the Minister's comment at the time but accepted it was a slip of the tongue, which can happen to any of us. I appreciate the correction he has made. On the issue of sustainable agriculture, Fianna Fáil believes sustainable agriculture must involve a fair price for farmers who produce food in an...

Seanad: Finance Bill 2014: Committee Stage (10 Dec 2014)

Denis O'Donovan: Before the Minister of State responds, I want to let the Leader and Members know that at the pace we are moving - after an hour and 20 minutes we are still on section 3 and there 101 sections - it is unlikely we will be finished by Christmas Eve, or even New Year's Eve, because no other business will be done.
