Seanad: Employment Equality (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2013: Committee Stage (Resumed) (2 Jul 2015)

David Norris: This brings me back to my initial position. I would prefer to see these exemptions got rid of altogether. The United Nation's Human Rights Committee in July 2014 said that Ireland should amend Section 37(1) of the Employment Equality Act "in a way that bars all forms of discrimination in employment in the fields of education and health". That is my position but I understand that it is not...

Seanad: Employment Equality (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2013: Committee Stage (Resumed) (2 Jul 2015)

David Norris: I support these amendments. Obviously I am against the discrimination of employees on the basis of sexual orientation. I am little bit surprised and am curious to know if there is a reason the word spouse was introduced rather than marriage or whatever. Perhaps the amendments were contemplated and put together before the passage of the referendum.

Seanad: Employment Equality (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2013: Committee Stage (Resumed) (2 Jul 2015)

David Norris: I am concerned about the term "spouse." I favour the term and prefer it to using the phrase of husband and wife in a same-sex relationship. The amendment is about marriage. It is very much in line with the thinking of the Irish people, as expressed in the marriage equality referendum and, therefore, it is appropriate that the amendment be put forward. It would be extraordinary, in these...

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Jul 2015)

David Norris: I would like to second the amendment to the Order of Business proposed by Senator Darragh O'Brien. I am rather a fan of David Hickey. I remember him as a very useful Dublin footballer. He was extremely courageous in support of Cuba and he was a very fine surgeon. I do not see how that case for corporate manslaughter could be sustained in court - I just do not see it running - but that is...

Seanad: Order of Business (1 Jul 2015)

David Norris: I see. I thank the Senator for that clarification. With regard to direct provision, the House is more or less united on this, even though it voted down my legislation on a series of completely spurious grounds, and we were promised that there would be movement on direct provision almost immediately, but we are still waiting for that. We have the report now, and for goodness' sake, let us...

Seanad: Order of Business (30 Jun 2015)

David Norris: I want to raise a particularly urgent matter, namely, the imminent fate of a Palestinian village which I know well and to which members of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade have travelled to visit, that is, Sousia in the south Hebron hills. I ask the Leader to write to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade and ask him to intervene in the situation and make a statement on the...
