Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jun 2008)

Rónán Mullen: He may wish to break free from the yoke of Europe completely, if Members will pardon the pun. I hope we will not do so because we need Europe and need to be good Europeans. I also hope, however, we now will have the courage to have a debate in this House.

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jun 2008)

Rónán Mullen: I am finishing now. There should be a debate in this House about exactly what measures we must agree with our European partners in order that Ireland can be fully integrated in Europe but also with the independence it needs to guarantee equality of life for its citizens and the right to determine certain matters which it regards to be issues for itself.

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jun 2008)

Rónán Mullen: I do not have that option. Would Fianna Fáil oblige me by bringing it forward?

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jun 2008)

Rónán Mullen: On a point of order, I also asked for a debate on Europe. Can that provide for?

Seanad: Broadcasting Bill 2008: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (25 Jun 2008)

Rónán Mullen: Cuirimse go huile agus go hiomlán leis an méid atá ráite ag an Seanadóir Ó Tuathail chomh fada agus a bhaineann sé leis an moladh seo, nár cóir d'aon duine a bheith caite isteach sa phriosún toisc nach bhfuil ceadúnas teilifíse acu. Tréaslaím leis an Seanadóir Norris agus an Seanadóir Ó Tuathail as an leasú sin a mholadh. It is remarkable that it could be possible for...

Seanad: Broadcasting Bill 2008: Report Stage (Resumed) (25 Jun 2008)

Rónán Mullen: I started daydreaming during Senator O'Toole's contribution, which does not often happen.

Seanad: Broadcasting Bill 2008: Report Stage (Resumed) (25 Jun 2008)

Rónán Mullen: I found myself imagining the scenario where the Minister returned from his summer holidays, full of vim and vigour, to tell his civil servants it would be better to give 5% to create a proper independent radio production centre. I also imagined him telling them to re-examine the heritage television channel. I would like to think it was more than a daydream. Since the Bill will not be...

Seanad: Broadcasting Bill 2008: Report Stage (25 Jun 2008)

Rónán Mullen: I move amendment No. 20: In page 33, to delete lines 5 to 17 and substitute the following: "(a) prepare a strategy for the provision of broadcasting services in the State additional to those provided by RTE, TG4, the Houses of the Oireachtas Channel, the Irish Film Channel, and the Heritage Channel, (b) prepare a strategy statement under section 29(1), (c) direct the Contract Awards Committee...

Seanad: Broadcasting Bill 2008: Report Stage (25 Jun 2008)

Rónán Mullen: Senator O'Toole obviously expects more success for his amendment than for mine.

Seanad: Broadcasting Bill 2008: Report Stage (25 Jun 2008)

Rónán Mullen: That is a different section.

Seanad: Broadcasting Bill 2008: Report Stage (25 Jun 2008)

Rónán Mullen: His persons have got it ready for him.

Seanad: Broadcasting Bill 2008: Report Stage (25 Jun 2008)

Rónán Mullen: I thank the Minister for his response. I have great respect for him but I do not believe the arguments he has made in which he seeks to distinguish between the case for an Irish film channel and a Houses of the Oireachtas channel and a proposal, such as mine, for a heritage channel holds up. If I understand the Minister correctly, he seems to be saying that because the Irish Film Institute...

Seanad: Broadcasting Bill 2008: Report Stage (25 Jun 2008)

Rónán Mullen: Apologies. Glaofaimid "daoine uaisle" orthu. Is léir go bhfuil daoine ag staideanna difriúla ag aoiseanna difriúla. The only reason I chose the age of 65 was that it is the normal retirement age. Senator Paul Bradford very generously acknowledged the general truth we all know that as people grow older, their tastes change and that as they move towards retirement, they have different...
