- Seanad: Order of Business (11 Mar 2015)
Paul Coghlan: Recent developments regarding the welfare Bill in Northern Ireland are deeply disappointing. It would be a great shame if the gains of the Stormont House Agreement were compromised or whittled down as a result of this apparent impasse. We know that the First Minister, Peter Robinson and the Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness, have travelled or are travelling to the United States. I...
- Seanad: Order of Business (11 Mar 2015)
Paul Coghlan: Nobody wants peace to go back one inch or one iota. We wish the parties well in resolving the matter pretty quickly.
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Mar 2015)
Paul Coghlan: I am very surprised by Senator Darragh O'Brien's call for the Taoiseach to come to the House today to discuss this matter which is the subject of an inquiry. He knows that the Taoiseach cannot speak outside the inquiry.
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Mar 2015)
Paul Coghlan: With respect, if the Senator were to call on anybody to talk about this matter, I suggest it would be the good judge, but we cannot do this as we do not have the power.
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Mar 2015)
Paul Coghlan: This arose from a letter the judge wrote, solely at his own discretion, to the Taoiseach as the sponsoring Minister saying that because of the Bailey case, its length and other matters concerning the Garda that were ongoing within the case, he needed more time.
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Mar 2015)
Paul Coghlan: We cannot know what is in the judge's mind. It is outrageous to suggest there is some contact between the Taoiseach and the good judge. That is impossible to countenance as we all know that we cannot interfere. Out of respect for the Leader of the Opposition, if it were somebody else, I would say this amounted to play acting and was totally out of order.
- Seanad: Report of British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly on Cross-Border Police Co-operation and Illicit Trade: Statements (10 Mar 2015)
Paul Coghlan: I thank the Minister of State, Deputy Harris, for his opening marks. I also thank Senator Jim Walsh for his contribution. The work carried out by the committee over approximately one year was very interesting. We had many interesting meetings in Dublin, Belfast, Armagh and Louth with all of the relevant authorities, Ministers, North and South, the Garda Commissioner, the PSNI Chief...

- Seanad: Order of Business (5 Mar 2015)
Paul Coghlan: I seriously commend Commissioner Hogan on his commitment that by the year end we will have new legislation to eliminate the unfair treatment of suppliers to supermarkets. As we know, the producers of food have been squeezed dry by the multiples and the large supermarkets over the years. This is a serious game changer. It is very significant news.
- Seanad: Order of Business (5 Mar 2015)
Paul Coghlan: I do not want to use crude language but we have talked about scata bullán before. The previous Commissioner failed to deal with this matter. Commissioner Hogan deserves great credit for his speech and what he has now promised for the producers. He said that this would happen before the end of the year. He said that there has been a considerable reduction in the proportion of the...
- Seanad: Order of Business (4 Mar 2015)
Paul Coghlan: We are all aware that the national lottery has experienced three outages or interruptions in service in recent weeks, including the cancellation of one draw. I am concerned about the impact these interruptions could have on sales at ticket terminals and that it would drive lottery players to an online environment. The new operators of the national lottery have made it clear that they see...
