- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Implementation of the New National Retrofit Plan: Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (5 Apr 2022)
Pauline O'Reilly: I thank the witnesses for the contributions so far. A lot has been covered. Retrofitting is a bit of a political football. The 100% and the 80% often gets left to the side, but the majority of funding is going in to those measures around poverty reduction, in particular fuel poverty reduction. Mr. Walsh has said that. Six months ago, people would have been paying for almost 100% of the...

Pauline O'Reilly: I thank Mr. Walsh.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Implementation of the New National Retrofit Plan: Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (5 Apr 2022)
Pauline O'Reilly: Just for a point of information on the regulations that would allow people to put more solar panels on their roofs and to allow schools, public buildings, farms and so on to do so, the appropriate assessment finished last week, so it actually happened within a matter of weeks. The same will happen for the strategic environmental assessment, SEA. The problem was getting to that point. The...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Future Funding of Higher Education: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Apr 2022)
Pauline O'Reilly: I thank the witnesses for their contributions. I have read all of their opening statements. As usual, I am bouncing between two committees. I thank them for joining us. A few things occurred to me. In his opening statement, Dr. Morning spoke about intersectionality. It seems to me there is intersectionality between the things that impact on our mental health. Having sat on the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Future Funding of Higher Education: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Apr 2022)
Pauline O'Reilly: I thank the Vice Chair. As always, these interactions help to bring people together so that they can have conversations with people they may not have met for the past couple of years despite the fact that they work in the same area. We hear that quite a bit. Two things strike me. One is expanding on some of the previous points around the things that cause anxiety. There is the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Future Funding of Higher Education: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Apr 2022)
Pauline O'Reilly: It is for everyone. I know everybody cannot answer but maybe we can have one or two contributions.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Future Funding of Higher Education: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Apr 2022)
Pauline O'Reilly: On the question about the changing nature of society and how there is a lack of security now for young people, does Dr. Duffy believe that is the reality which is perhaps different from 20 years ago?
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (30 Mar 2022)
Pauline O'Reilly: It is good to have the Leas-Chathaoirleach back in the Chamber. I thank Senator Chambers for outlining the Order of Business. Previous speakers mentioned that much has been achieved in the past couple of days in the context of greening Ireland and climate and biodiversity. I acknowledge both that and the historic step forward taken last night in the Seanad to finally end fur farming in...
- Seanad: Animal Health and Welfare and Forestry (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2021: Report Stage (29 Mar 2022)
Pauline O'Reilly: It is important to remember that this legislation is born out of a passion for planting trees and for increasing the footprint of forestry across the country, and for ensuring that everyone can take part. That is where it is coming from. Sometimes, it is more appropriate to do things in regulations than in primary legislation. It allows one to do the appropriate assessments. I understand...
- Seanad: Animal Health and Welfare and Forestry (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2021: Report Stage (29 Mar 2022)
Pauline O'Reilly: Now.
- Seanad: Animal Health and Welfare and Forestry (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2021: Report Stage (29 Mar 2022)
Pauline O'Reilly: The two main things that this Bill addresses are animal welfare and nature, through the planting of woodland. It is a positive Bill and a positive story. We have known for a long time that mink farming had to end, as it has in other countries. I would say it is a cruel practice, which is now recognised. Only by ending it do we enable businesses to be compensated. We must pass the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy Challenges: Discussion (29 Mar 2022)
Pauline O'Reilly: I thank the witnesses for their opening statements, which will form part of the report. When we talk about security of supply, cost is important. Having LNG terminals does not mean it is, therefore, an indigenous industry such as offshore renewable wind would be where we have control over the cost and the amount we have. In her opening statement, Ms Connolly went into some detail about the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy Challenges: Discussion (29 Mar 2022)
Pauline O'Reilly: Before the witness comes in on that, I will have to leave to contribute to another committee meeting, but I will listen to the proceedings later. I thank the witnesses for their contributions and I look forward to hearing the further contributions.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy Challenges: Discussion (29 Mar 2022)
Pauline O'Reilly: If I may come in on that, it is not the cost of the infrastructure I am talking about, but the cost of the gas. That is the part people are not aware of. It is not just about the terminal but that it is not giving us control over the cost of the gas that is being imported either.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Future Funding of Higher Education: Discussion (Resumed) (29 Mar 2022)
Pauline O'Reilly: I thank the witnesses for their opening statements and contributions. I am balancing a couple of committees, but I have read all of the statements and I was keeping an eye on this meeting. It is fair to say Ireland probably has a greater number of SMEs than other countries. When I spoke about this previously, I noted that 1 million people are employed by SMEs. Do the witnesses feel...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Future Funding of Higher Education: Discussion (Resumed) (29 Mar 2022)
Pauline O'Reilly: That is very helpful and interesting observation regarding MIT. We have a different model here, and that is what I was trying to get to. When we look at our workforce of 1 million in SMEs, are the two joined up enough? Mr. McDonnell is really saying “No.”
- Seanad: Election of Acting Chairman (24 Mar 2022)
Pauline O'Reilly: I propose Senator Horkan.
- Seanad: Gnó an tSeanaid - Business of Seanad (24 Mar 2022)
Pauline O'Reilly: I am sure we will all have an opportunity to extend our condolences to the Fitzpatrick family. On behalf of the Government, I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to his family.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Mar 2022)
Pauline O'Reilly: The Order of Business is No. 1, Consumer Protection (Regulation of Retail Credit and Credit Servicing Firms) Bill 2021 – Second Stage, to be taken at 1.15 p.m. and to conclude at 2.30 p.m., with the opening contribution of the Minister not to exceed ten minutes and the contribution of all Senators not to exceed six minutes, and the Minister to be given not less than ten minutes to...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Mar 2022)
Pauline O'Reilly: At the outset, I will be proposing a motion with regard to the former Deputy and Senator, Dermot Fitzpatrick. I will read that at the end of the Order of Business, after which we will stand for one minute's silence. There were obviously many expressions of sympathy, which we will get to later. I have already indicated my own sympathies on behalf of the Government. I did not know Dermot...
