John Gilroy: How can one bring in legislation that is not constitutional?
- Seanad: Order of Business (2 Oct 2013)
John Gilroy: Reference was made to statements made by my colleague, the Minister of State at the Department of Health, Deputy White. I want to put on record that regardless of whether we agree with what he said, he is probably the only person who has actually put up a proper argument in favour of abolishing the Seanad. He has published a very good paper on his website. We must disagree with it but at...

- Seanad: Services for People with Disabilities: Motion (25 Sep 2013)
John Gilroy: I welcome the Minister of State to the Chamber and I add my voice to those wishing another Minister of State, Deputy Kathleen Lynch, my good friend and constituency colleague, a speedy recovery. She is doing an immense job and covers four different sectors in Departments, any one of which could easily carry a junior Ministry on its own. The work she is doing in the area is commendable. I...
- Seanad: Services for People with Disabilities: Motion (25 Sep 2013)
John Gilroy: I need protection right enough. It is important we have this conversation in advance of the budget and that is a benefit of today's motion. Nobody has a monopoly on concern in the area and there is no question that there have been cuts. Of course it is unsatisfactory that we have seen cuts, although I am afraid I supported cuts last year. On balance, although it was difficult, the savings...
- Seanad: Services for People with Disabilities: Motion (25 Sep 2013)
John Gilroy: Absolutely. I do not have any insight into the nature and extent of that unhappiness. I am unhappy and we must do some awful things when we are part of the Government. I could use my time lambasting Fianna Fáil for its mismanagement of the economy that has resulted in these cuts. I will not do so but we should agree it is an underlying reason.

John Gilroy: There is some revisionism there.
- Seanad: Services for People with Disabilities: Motion (25 Sep 2013)
John Gilroy: I am worse to rise to it. I will leave my contribution at that. I welcome the proposal, if not the tone of its introduction. It is a pity it is couched in such party political terms. Senator Power did her best to remove that tone, and that is a reflection of the nature in which the Seanad should be run. Senator O'Brien dragged the tone back to narrow party politics and blame but I should...

John Gilroy: That is a good point.
- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Sep 2013)
John Gilroy: I seek a debate on the freedom of the press in light of disturbing reports I have heard in respect of the sacking in recent weeks of an award-winning investigative journalist, Gemma O'Doherty. Some of her work has been raised on the floor of this House. This case has been reported extensively in international media and social media but it does not seem to have generated any traction in our...
